THE SETTING

The year is 2763, and humanity has taken to the stars.

The first manned mission to Mars took place in 2057, placing the first ten humans on the red planet. Forty years later, the first human extra planetary colony emerged on the airless surface of the moon. Soon, other planets began to follow, sparking a migration unlike any other in human history. People left the planet to escape poverty, ignorance, hate, any number of injustices, all that mattered was that they left.

But it was never enough.

Earth has been all but abandoned, the planet being slowly choked to death under the ever encroaching urban sprawl, and the solar system is the home of a thousand burgeoning colonies, each dotting the surfaces of every world in the Sol like so many bits of sand. Corporations, fat off the power they have gained from the resources on the virgin worlds of the Sol, have crept into every facet of society. The distinction between nation and corporation is beginning to blur in the Sol.

Ever resolute, humanity has begun to adapt to life in space and to the surfaces of harsh and alien worlds. Gene manipulation, and bionic enhancements have begun to enhance humanity, make it stronger, make it better. Men who live in space have been engineered with jet black skin and enhanced epidermal layers, better to withstand the harsh radiation of the sun. Humanity has engineered those who live on earth with powerful lungs, capable of breathing the toxin ridden sky. And others have willingly changed themselves for other reasons, for religious, for personal, whatever the reason, they’ve changed. And underneath all this, the question remains, what is human anymore?

This is a world in flux. This is a world on the cusp of discovery, and disaster.

And amid all this, humanity still pushes forward, out into the stars, out into the unknown.

THE SHIP

You are the crew of the IPS (Interplanetary Parliament Starship) Intrepid, a fairly routine science vessel of the Interplanetary Parliament (A government spanning from mercury to mars) its mission for the last ten years has been to study various phenomena in the local solar system. But now the ownership of the Intrepid has changed hands, to the rather ambitious colonization facilitation company known as AeonCorp.

AeonCorp has decided to retool the ship into a deep space explorer, both interested an enthralled with the Idea of exploring the unknown outside the solar system “Proxima Centauri” And one way or another, you are the ones chosen for the ride. Your mission: To explore the nearest system to the Sol and archive your scientific findings. Why are you doing it? Is it the money? The adventure? Or is it something else?

Whatever the reason, it is going to be a long time in the stasis pod. Buckle up.

To facilitate the journey, the ship has been fitted with an experimental warp drive. It has been tested, but it it the first of it’s kind. Scientists are wary of it, but the reward outweighs the risk. Still, it is going to take a year to get to Proxima Centauri. At least the drive eliminates any relativistic effects.

Communication back to earth is handles through a powerful FTL communication device (The developers call it the Oracle). Still, the communication is not instant. It will take five days to relay any communication back to earth from Proxima Centauri.

It is also about 200 meters long and holds 30 crewmembers. Only ten of which are supposed to be active at any time (Read, out of stasis) It has enough food for at least 5 years. The VI on board is names Sybil, and has been given a female voice.

The only weapons on board are owned by the Captain and the Second in command

the Intreped supports artificial gravity in the common room, cabins, and engine of the ship. Everything else is weightless. Crew members are required to spend ample time in the weighted areas to avoid bone and muscle atrophy

IMPORTANT WORLD INFORMATION:

The Ships in this future are limited to sub light speeds. It used to take about 130 days to get to Mars from earth, but with the advent of the cheap power of fusion, the trip has been shortened to about thirty days, give or take ten depending on the position of the planet.

Warp drives are being researched, but the progress has been limited. The most famous test was the THV (Trans-human Vessel) Discovery. While technically a success, the discovery achieved faster than light speeds, but was soon lost. Where ever the Discovery went, no one knows. Many physicists are frightened to try again

AI’s are illegal, and clones for the most part are considered only part human.

The Intrepid in a multinational venture, though a Parliamentary sponsored one

Personal weapons are still limited to gunpowder, but they are significantly stronger than the present day weapons. Rail guns are limited to ships.

Fullerine has been invented, and is quite the popular material

---More to come as I think of it---

RULES:

1) No God moding: This is survival horror, act like it

2) Obey the GM’s ruling: This will not work unless the GM can successfully arbitrate. Please don’t make this difficult

3) PVP is allowed, but controlled: All PVP conflicts will be subject to my arbitration, and I will not hesitate to kill a character. Fighting is serious business.

4) Flesh out the world: I can’t think of everything to put into the setting, so make up your own stuff! Drop company names, friends celebrities, the, anything you can think of! Just remember to keep things believable and on the same level as everyone else and we should do fine. This is a collaborative project people!

5) Obey the forum rules: Seriously, do it.

6) Have fun: I don’t want to run this if it’s going to be a bore.

7) If you die you’ll have to make a new character. No clones.

CHARACTER SHEET
Name: (self explanatory)

Age: (again, pretty obvious)

Species/transhuman status: (This is the fun one. Normal humans are Homo sapiens saipan. If you want to have a different species, give the scientific name, a common name, and general description. Remember, all of these are variants of human, only genetically modified. If you are a clone, of heavily body modified person, please note this here)

Appearance: (How do you look?)

Equipment: (What did you bring with you on the Intrepid? You can have enough stuff to fill a small cabin)

Background: (Where do you come from? Be creative, not cliché)

Skills: (Things you can do. Pleas rate skills between 1, or novice, to 6, the best)

Virtues: (Personality or biological advantages go here)

Flaws: (Personality or biological disabilities go here)

Employment: (who do you work for? And why?)

CREW POSITIONS I NEED FILLED:

CAPTAIN
SECOND IN COMMAND
AEONCORP REPRESENTATIVE
MEDICAL DOCTOR
ENGINEER

Everyone else should be some form of grease monkey or scientist. Some of the positions above should also have scientific leanings. This is a science expedition after all.

I would like to reserve the spot of the Aeoncorp Representative or engineer. I want one over the other. If someone else wants engineer, they can have it, or the other way around. I don't feel like picking between the two right now.

I'll give you a proper character and some more input into the world itself a little later. I'm working on something right now.

Can I be an engineer working on our experimental FTL drive?
I'll come up with some corporation that made it and whatnot, but I'm the guy supposed to be able to repair it if/when it breaks, so we can at least bring home test data this time.

Hmn... I might go with a scientist role. But my knowledge in that field stinks.
And I know squat about being a grease monkey :/

I really wanna do an RP... I think... I might go with being a scientist.

But don't get mad at me if I make up random things >_O

Writting the CS now.

Hows about you get to be the Rep.

Go for it. This RP will be relativly slow at first, but the rest is entirely dependent on the PC's

Sure. You don't even need to ask (There are about 3 piolots on the Intreped)

Who am I to stop you?

Everyone else looks OK. Remember though people. If you are not sure about a scientific princible and you don't have an books there's always Google!

Name: Carla "Fluffy" Kollet

Age: 25

Species/transhuman status: Human with cat ears and tail. Known commonly as "Prowlers"

Appearance: 5' 6" slender build. Long muliti coloured hair (Think punk colours of red, green and dark blues mixed with gothic blacks and bleached blonde) that goes down to to hip length. She often has it tied back in a long pony tail with a few weaves separate (think padawan weaves from star wars). She his two rings in the top of her right ear.

Not one for fashion she wears the unflattering ensemble of a white tank top a cargo pants. She wears a very loose belt this isn't actually holding anything up. She has large durable boots and a pair of fingerless gloves.

Equipment: Guitar and amp. Photo of her mother. A Collection of Synth 'n' Screams Death Metal music on Digi-disc (for reference look up Enter Shikari and Blood Stain Child). A Old Digi-disc player that she has had since she was 12. A few changes of clothes, though most are just variations on what she already wears.

Background: She grew up on the space station Thor that orbits Mars. Her mother was a strange women working for the ID (Interplanetary Defence) as a research scientist, mainly on A class fighters. She often shunned social events, much preferring the company of her many cats.

Carla was born via IVF treatment and had her genetics altered to that of a Prowler. Prowlers were more often fashioned to be used in the dark mines of mercury, but her mother found them cute and had always wanted a daughter.

She was bullied as a child, being what she was and the only thing that took her mind off it was watching the fighters in the test area. All she wanted to do was fly.

Her mother feel ill near to her 16th birthday and soon after died. Not knowing what to do she set off for the ID with the intent of being a pilot. She showed amazing promise, but an accident ruined it for her. In a live ammunition exercise she let off a missile at what she thought was a target, but was a refugee vessel that had strayed into the field operation. She was dishonourably discharged from the army.

She drifted from bad job to bad job until she almost starved to death in the Mars slums. She was on the brink of a breakdown and had been attempting to sell her body for food. Luck for her she was picked up by Rouke (Will be my back up if she snuffs it, or up for grabs if anyone wants a go at him), an ex mercenary who now worked as a freelance pilot for the Ion Corp. He got her a job working with him and she was soon promoted to pilot on his recommendation, he gladly settled for co-pilot. He’d wanted to take things a bit easier anyway.

After 7 years working for Ion Corp. she began to crave something more from life and it just so happened Rouke had caught wind of the Intrepid’s mission. It asked for pilots, despite the fact most of the systems were controlled by an AI. She wasn’t so sure, but he convinced her none the less with the lure of adventure and an easy time, branding it a ‘holiday’.

Skills: Basic weapons training (2). Piloting of cargo ships (6), Piloting of an A class fighter (5) Piloting of the IPS Intrepid (4), Guitar playing (1 think Lister in Red Dwarf crapness), Singing (4), basic mechanics most cargo ship based (2 she can help but not a lot)

Virtues: Being a Prowler she has enhanced hearing and can see pretty well in the dark. She is extremely confident in her abilities as a pilot, can keep control under high pressure. Put up a good front, comments rolling off her like water off a ducks back.

Flaws: Her front is just that, a front. She does deeply care what others think of her. If under pressure when not piloting she often panics. Haunted by her experience in the army. Need to take anti anxiety pills which she dubs her “Catnip”.

Employment: Joined the ID air force division at the age of 16. Was dishonourably discharged at 17. Started working for Ion Corps. As a freelancer at 19 as a labourer on one of it’s cargo ship. Promoted to Pilot at 20. Ditched the cargo ship to sign up for the deep space exploration science vessel the IPS Intrepid after much convincing from Rouke.

How was that?

Good stuff right there Nuff. I now have enough information about her to screw with her mind royaly, and I got few nifty bits of world infomation.

She is now the first Prowler (Homo Sapien Catus) on the ship. Her legal rights are identical to a humans, except on Io, the saturn colonies, and Neptune, where she recieves only partial rights.

Nope. it's all weightless up there. Just a few straps and a mess load of handrails. Most pilots do not bother with the straps while in space though, they feel it limits their mobility.
