I can't run any MP3s or install a Java plug-in. Could anyone run me through this? I had to switch to (Ubuntu) Linux because Windows refused to install on my computer.

I'm using Gnome.

I've got the following files downloaded as well:

jre-1_5_0_09-linux-i586.bin
Got this from the Java website.

libid3tag-0.15.1b
Downloaded this folder from http://www.underbit.com/products/mad/

Firefox came with my installation CD along with GAIM,

Ubuntu uses GNOME.

As for installing Java go to http://java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp

And as for Macromedia Flash: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/

For playing mp3's, there should be some application already associated with it. I can't exactly remember since I gave my Ubuntu computer to a friend. If you mean that you are trying to play it, but it isn't working, then go to the Device Manager. And click that button on the bottom and follow through the wizard. And hopefully it finds the proper sound card.

you have to activate the "universe" and maybe "multivisere" repositories. The reason behind that is that MP3 and some other codecs are not as free as they would have to be included in the main distribution. (read: legal reasons!)
If you use Rhythmbox or another apllication based on GNOME, you need to install gstreamer-VERSION-ugly-plugins or gstreamer-VERSION-bad-plugins. Don't know if the names are exact, but just use the search in the package manager "Synaptic".

Actually, i recently had this problem on my ubuntu pc.
If you're using LTS 6.06 (Dapper Drake), here's what you do:
Log on in an administrator account (Probably the one you use)
Go to applications, and Add/remove.
Look in Media, and Expand the menu titled "More Applications..."
Look for something called Kaffiene (It's a multimedia player). Install anything that looks remotely related to Kaffiene.
Install the packages, and restart. It should play Mp3s, Mpegs, avi, wmv, whatever. (It took me forever to figure out how to do this).

if this doesn't work, post what's happening in here, and i'll keep helping
I've got a lot of experience with Ubuntu, and i might need to grab you a codec package for Ubunti. If i do, i'll tell you how to install it.
