there is a severe lack of love for the obscure pieces of software known as "freeware" on these boards, i vote we change this.

if you've got a game to reccomend (and/or rave about) do it here. :D

preferably have all of these in your post:
- download link
- link to a review
- what type of game it is
- and the official site (if not already linked to)
-----------------------------------
ill start us off:
(all of these are sidescrolling shooters, im obsessed with them)

ChoRenSha 68K (GH Review)
quite possibly one of the most addictive games ive played as of yet. a real pain to finish though, and ive never got past the 3rd level. Insanely hard, but for some reason i keep coming back for more.
(the controlls are a little odd. shift is shoot, and ctrl is drop bomb)
Download: http://www.pcgaming.ws/download.php?game=chorensha_68k

Tumiki Fighters (GH Review and Download)
yet another one of my favorites, ignore the fact that gamehippo gave it a 4 out of 10, this thing was made from pure unadulterated Style. plus it seems so happy, and you cant help smiling as you amass parts untill your ship takes up half the screen. Often described as "katamari damacy in a sidescroller"

Techno-Sylph - (aka Vsys Gaiden) (GH Review and Download)
this one is certantly something you might want to play when drunk, lots and lots of shiney colors, goes at a nice smooth pace and the music isnt all too bad either. However the readmie isnt in english, so if you can speak whatever language its in, youll have to referr to the review which gives you a (very) basic outline of how the game works

its been on my computer for 2 years now and i STILL have nfi :/
Official Site - its in japanese(?) though, so i cant read it :P

ill post more later

In the words of one, Tinted_Green;

"That game will eat your life"

And it has!

Transport Tycoon Deluxe for Windows (Review and Download)
Simulation, lead your own transport corporation to the win.

Personally, i only used the above source to get a hold of the graphics. I run it with the OpenTTD.org engine.

Abandonia - A site dedicated to abandonware games, it has download links for most of the games listed, a link to the developer site, reviews and it's sorted by genre.

something for those of you that like your multiplayer games :D
----
Subspace (aka Continuum)
Download Site: http://www.subspacedownloads.com/
----
This game has been around for quite a while (by a while, i mean 4+ years), and ive recently started playing it again. Essentially its a top down spaceship game...

...and i cant really give you more than that. the way its structured is so that the server defines pretty much all the game rules, all the game skins and all the levels. This gives you one hell of a choice of gameplay styles (someone even made an RPG out of it at one stage)

I personally preferr to hang around the SSCU Trenchwars server, which is a sort of a teambased king of the hill stlye game, with a few CTF elements thrown in to boot. however they made some custom maps and whatnot (like twtown and twcity) which is a massive city constructed entirelly by player submitted houses.

if your ever in twcity, have a snoop down around the bottom right hand corner for "greenhaven" i made it myself <3

all in all an awesome way to waste a weekend :D

Cave Story

One of the coolest freeware games out there. It's a side-scrolling shoot 'em up type game.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is awesome.

I recommend this list on Wikipedia be checked out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_freeware_games

My favorites on the list are America's Army, Flyff, and GunZ.

I play it too. I play on Dementia. It's a bit tricky though since you have to edit a file in windows in order to properly connect with the server.
