Some reiteration on that tower... It's been at least implied that the Generals have been a little... Off, starting around the tower's construction, that much is simple enough. Also, it seems that most of the populace is more or less sane. This may change when the tower is built up entirely, but that would make it an effect specific to the Basitin tower, as the towers in human territory hold no such (obvious) effects on humans.

However, one thing that Keith and the generals have in common is having seen the towers close up. This goes for the mind-mulched slave in the Human tower as well, while Keith remained relatively untouched. As said mind-mulching is apparently the long-term effect, short-term symptoms could manifest as paranoia and general edgey behavior enough to be appropriate of a sliding scale of exposure.

Remember, the project is supposed to be secret. Average guards and whatnot won't be anywhere as close as the Generals and Keith have been. The tower being coustom-built to affect the locals might be useful, but the leaders can be disposed of with the standard design. It's quite possible the Templar hadn't even factored this into their project, only planning to gain a foothold on the island with their magic tower.

As an alternative, Keith could simple be suffering from direct control... The onset of his desire to kill was rather sudden, and before the apparent mental pain he wasn't ready to act on the situation at all. I just wanted to go for the more complex angle, but it's not impossible for something new to have arrived within the Generals' arsenal.

Lastly, sorry if someone's mentioned this already... I don't come here all that often.
