The 'r' is still somewhat difficult to read for me.

The problem is that anything sophisticated enough to beat a bot is going to be difficult for a lot of humans too. It's why I've started attempts to utilize browser trickery; I just don't have enough data for how reliable it is. I got enough whining from the boss about the absurdly simple CAPTCHA I cobbled together that I know that users are going to get upset about anything particularly difficult.

Heck, showing them a picture of a character from TwoKinds and asking them to type the name is going to be a stretch for some people. I see "Keith" misspelled on a nearly daily basis. :P

What about a Flash applet as the means of registration, and have it reject any "Virtual" input(i.e sending a text string to a field, or simulating a mouse-click on a control) this way only the keyboard and mouse can be used.

That would work well, against stuff set up to register automatically. (at least until someone decides to figure out what data it sends to the server, and bypasses the Flash or Java thing entirely... at which point it just becomes an annoying useless Flash file/Java applet) However, if its some low-payed person doing it... its not going to help.
