Well most people will get annoyed wend Sci-fi gets the facts wroung (ei 'space is cold') Fantasy isn't any different, magic NEEDS rules or else will become a Deus Ex Machina, armour should at least be realistic enough to look like it can be used in a battle (Chain mail, 'soft armour' plate armour all design for the used to desprist it's weight so the user can wear 80 pounds wought without being slow or if fell down can get back up {fun fact: US Marines wear over 150 pounds of gear}) is that so much to ask?
plus right now... nothing pisses me off more than "It's Magic we don't have to explaine it"
While I agree that magic should have rules, we are only one school of thought in Fantasy, and the other school of thought is that magic does what it needs to do to solve the situation at hand -- magic in that conception really
does tend to run as deus ex machina. Like you, I don't care for that concept of magic as much, but it's a very popular one in Fantasy. Look at Harry Potter, for instance, for an example of "magic that just does stuff."
Again, it's fantasy -- a common fantasy trope is that each race speaks one, or maybe two languages or dialects, and really no more. And it's a common trope in fantasy
and sci fi for everyone to speak a "common" language. TwoKinds is notable because there
isn't some sort of trade argot all of the races use.
We only know bits and pieces of Flora's history. We know it wasn't permitted for Keidran slave to learn to read Human, but we don't know if the slaves teach each other to read their own language, unbeknownst to their masters (which is at least reasonably likely). We also don't know much about Flora's time outside of slavery, but she's apparently very well bred and considered valuable enough to the Tigers for her to work in an alliance by marriage, so it's also reasonable to assume she has some education outside of her slavery.
