I wonder...is bot-fest '08 about to begin? 'Cause it seems bots are becoming more and more frequent, and it seems they've found ways around the censors/blocks/etc.

I just checked the member list.

HOLY ****, we have 25 new users TODAY who haven't made any posts.
And one who spammed one in the RP board.

Try 2 seperate bots, one of whom just posted some rather bad items for younger viewers...Well, not just, but within the past 30 mins.

I've been wondering, and I think this is an ok place to put it, but who takes care of the bots? Is it the mods or the admins?

I don't think Mods have the power to delete accounts and the like.
If they did, the more active mods would have cleared them out long ago. I think only admins can do anything.

Maybe even only Tom.

Shame then. 'Cause I think Tom is the only active admin.

I sure haven't seen him on the forum since he updated his drawing thread.

I think he hides his online status.

Methinks Sage might be able to do it as well.

Sage isn't an administrator though, just Nanaki and Tom. Unless he's got custom rights which I'm not sure is possible with phpbb. Not experienced enough with it, myself.

Isn't there a word-scramble that you have to type in before you can make an account? Thought that was the ultimate bot shield.

And fire was great for keeping heat away. With some of these things, I take it, it just isn't good enough. Check the member list and lookit all the 0 posters with goofy names.

What's the benefit of putting bots on a forum, anyway? Ours don't even post. Like a gathering army of paraplegics.

Slows it down, lets them spam when they want, who knows, maybe it's an army waiting to spring and send spam across the forum, a great tide that members can do nothing against, only our great lords able to battle back their tides.

Most bots are designed with one purpose - sign up for a forum and then spam it with links, ads, or images. The reason why the bots on this forum for the most part do not post is because they can't. Paraplegics is a pretty accurate analogy. I have set up these forums so that members cannot post links or images until they have at least two posts under their post count. Since most bot's only purpose is to make links and images, it becomes stuck and can't do anything.

That's the reason why there are so many signed up bots that are inactive with no post counts. There's not a lot we can do right now to stop them from signing up, but I've effectively stopped most of them from being able to do anything.
