Sheesh, you would think that they grab onto subjects like this early in the schools, but no. Each passing year I find that more English (or any other language, really) tutors begin to forgive too much. They chose their profession, they're paid to teach and a major part of modern language depends on them, but no.

Let's just sit back and watch while the kids hopefully realize to educate themselves. That always works. [/quosarcasm]

What concerns me the most are probably short, useless terms like "lol", "omg" etc. (which people don't even use as the whole sentence is meant to be used, but always with sarcasm) and the lack of basics, such as capitalization, quotes and so on...

I don't have any issues with "lol" "rofl" or "rofflemywaffles" as long as it stays online. I use "lol" quite a bit, actually. It's good conversation filler, and it beats typing in the exact amount of "has" I have uttered while laughing :)

As long as it stays out of casual conversation, and I've heard people verbally say "lawl" and "roffle," I'm fine with it.

Ah, my bad. I forgot to separate them, so it seemed as if I was writing only about written language. So I'll just add that the "lols" and "omgs" in spoken language bother me.

If someone says "lol" instead of really laughing, that's not laughing at all. That's more like mocking. If someone says "omg"... Well, you get the point.

And I still recall a piece of homework by a friend of mine, which was something between the lines of "..and when nukes hit the ground, the jenkis were all like lol...."
The horror...

I remember last year in Writers Circle I had to judge a poem that was full of this 'text-lingo'. It was bad enough that it was a generic love poem (seriously, you get tired of those).

And when you type so fast you run into this problem.

I use the Word English feature on my phone >.> I press the letters once, in order, and then it gives me all the words that the keys fit. Usually only one, but sometimes two or three, depending on length.

My phone has all the letters on their own buttons and easy access to capitalization and punctuation. I still use complete proper sentences when texting. Is that something wrong with me, or something right? :?

Chat rooms and forums are entirely two different things. Piss poor grammar is not acceptable on forums. It is acceptable everywhere else on the internet. Online games, texting, chat rooms and such.

I come from warboards.org and they are very elitist. Especially in the intellectual round table section. Anything under a paragraph is an instant infraction, make a mistake in your grammar and you we be mocked for quite some time. I stay in the members lounge which is less restrictive but is still moderated 24/7.

As a result I despise bad grammar in all aspects, it's simply lazy and shows you have the mental sophistication and comprehension ability of a turd. There's a place and a time for everything.

Now I'm curious as to what Raph said to envoke Yash's wrath so quickly. :|

To put it politely, he felt QuothTheRaven took things too seriously.

Perhaps we are not so strict as warboards.org, but I still don't mind seeing correct grammar. I'm not advocating a crack down, necessarily, but if it's difficult to break apart your sentences or read what you write, then people are likely to ignore what you write or mock you. As I said, we only know people by what they project online. Proper grammatical usage goes a long way to winning respect and admiration. Poor grammar has to be backed up by simple, succinct, and always accurate comments if the poster expects to be well respected in general. The amount of effort necessary to be treated seriously and have your comments read when your grammatical usage is poor far, far outweighs the effort necessary simply to write with better grammar.

I cannot underscore enough how quickly a person with poor or unusual grammatical conventions gets regaled to the inner ignore list of a lot of commenters, so it doesn't matter how insightful or intelligent they are -- nobody bothers to read their posts because they offload the energy that it takes to make their sentences sensible to the readers. Most of us are fairly lazy readers; we'd rather the writer put in the effort to make us want to read what they write, rather than post up virtual gibberish and expect us to make sense of it. We've seen otherwise intelligent posters who actually want and try to contribute get derided and ignored because they refused to write by grammatical standards. It's an important part of communication, even on the forums.
