While I do really love the "Dick and Jane meet Sinistar" picture, I was actually thinking of something more like this:

In light of all the language discussion on the Ranting Board, google it.

Google now being a recognized verb in the Websters dictionary.

In answer to your question, Sinistar.

To the best of my reasoning ability, I would think that is has something to do with Sinistar's quotes from the game. During the game he would chase you saying things like "I HUNGER." The relation of this character to Flora in the current minikinds strip is probably meant to bring the image of Flora chasing Trace yelling "I HUNGER."

As far as it having a cult following, I would not go so far as to say that it has any more of a following than many other classic games of the that era.

Seeing as how there is already prefab art about it, I'm guessing it's another -chan meme...
O.o

Never played the game myself...

Edit:
I take it back - after reading the Wiki, it's not a -chan thing, but a WoW thing...
Not like those two are mutually exclusive, mind you...
XD

Sinistar was a notable arcade game because of its ambiance. For one thing, it was one of the first games to actually have a voice, one that spoke real, discernible words. Not just that, but they're kind of creepy, and when coupled with the way the game portrayed him, Sinistar caught the imagination. He was the boogeyman of a generation of arcade players.

I'm sure the -chans are a source of a lot of Sinistar art, but they aren't the only ones, I've read a philosophical discussion of Sinistar's quotes. All six of them. It was hilarious. I'll link it if I can find it. I'm most familiar with Sinistar from the old GameSpy humor column, The Daily Victim, actually. I haven't played the game either.

The reason I did that was actually Schrodinger's quote "Run, Trace, Run," which reminded me of that Dick and Jane art he links later. That the MiniKinds was about eating humans made Trace's "running" appropriate instead of just a funny private joke, so I saw fit to make the gag here.

Ah. Here it is. The promised look at the philosophical revelations of Sinistar. I found most of the Sinistar gags, save the Daily Victim, when Aaron Williams of Nodwick highlighted them on his LJ/site news.
