You have to put down a farm plot, and have farmer dwarves and assign them to it.

I managed to kill a hydra with sand. Then my own leg.

Uh.
He doesnt do anything.
Or I just don't have any seeds.
But when I did have seeds he didn't do anything either
:C

Edit:Crap, It's winter, I don't have any seeds, and my one hunter is mildly injured.

Edit:Made it through winter with everyone still alive!
Plus My mokovs or whatever had babies.

Also why did the Elf Merchant come to my Depot but didn't do any trading.

Draft a few dwarves and make fortifications, and start up a moat that goes around your entrance, don't worry, bridges come later.

It's quite easy to pick-up if you understand the core mechanics, construction, and militarization. Then after those mandatory things come Experimentation

I made a door to the outside at the base of the mountain, and dug a river channel to my door, so now the dwarves have a water source!

I'm planning on making a well, since my dwarves hate drinking out of the river I'm next to.

Also, I got 5 guys in military
The leader is an axeman who has an antique silver battleaxe with a really long name.
THere are 2 swordsman and 2 crossbowmen.

How do I set them to Fortress Guard?

@scorpio
Start off with Adventure mode first, it's alot simpler
once you die or abandon the adventure dude and get everything, go do Fortress Mode

THat's what I did anyway

Chaosye, I suggest making a seperate, stairway down a level away from the fortress, then, dig out two rooms 3x5, with the 3 end starting at the staircase.
After that, clean up that level then clear it out.

When done there, build a wall to surround it, with enough room for a staircase. After that's done, put up a door and such. Next, build upward to form a tower which on the newly built floor, you shall wall it up, with another staircase, (or an up/down one) Then go up to the top floor and wall up certain areas. When done it should be like this.

Basement: Armor and Weapon Storage, optional connection to fortress.

Main floor: Entry point for Soldiers.

First Floor: Barracks and beds, maybe chests for belongings.

Top Floor/Roof: Parapets or otherwise

There you have it, a Guard Tower.

(It's a real stone-cleaner too, used it for my overflowing stockpile probs.)

Well I already made a barracks and I'm using it to hold the military and the people who havn't gotten they're individual roosm yet(I have like 40 people in my fortress)

But I'll make that area soon, thanks for the tip

But what about water?
My river ain't freezing up anymore and if I make a channel it will flood my underground farm.

For that, you'd have to make a useless addition to your digging list.

Ahem,
dig out a tunnel while avoiding the water until the end, that is 2x(length) and at the end put grates to descend. Then make another set of stairs to go even lower and dig out under to where you want the well. When you need to turn off the water, use a floodgate to retrieve something or save a dwarf, (they fall down wells) when all set and cleared out, you can knock out the last section and it will flood the tunnels. (Note, make a place where the water can flood out)

An alternate method, Build a well-house over water and put the well there.

I didn't really get anything you said
SO I dig to the river, and right before it, put a floodgate, dig the rest and let my dwarves escape before letting it run(I have a wall so it won't go out of the dug area, and won't flood anything.)

Sounds good, just re-evaluate, make sure it won't get out, unless you want it to, and make sure that also you may want to test it with your dwarves quarantined. (You may need to add a drainage tunnel.)
