Since it's been a while since the last two threads were in existence, I thought I'd try again to get it started.

This is meant as a serious discussion on topics involving homosexuality and modern life; topics including, but not limited to, same-sex marriage and adoption, homophobia, life and experience being a homosexual, and other related topics.

What I do not want is flaming of any kind from anyone. If you have nothing constructive to say, don't bloody well say it, even if you feel someone has said something inflammatory; let's not let this thread devolve into chaos. However, that said, I welcome anyone to give their thoughts and opinions on these topics. Just, as always, make sure you state them in a calm, rational way.

A note to the mods: if you feel the thread is starting to get off-topic, please let me know and post a message notifying us. Due to the unique nature of this thread's open-ended topic, it will be easy to seem like we're going ff-topic, even if it's still a tangentially-related issue. If you have a problem with something in the thread, please PM me before "accidentally" deleting it. Thanks guys!

So, to start: how big of a role do you think gay-rights' issues will play in this upcoming election compared to the previous two, where gay marriage was a big issue?

As for how they play, I think everyone is too preoccupied with the economy and the war for it to be a big point.

I agree, With Gas prices through the roof and the economy in the toilet the average joe is more worried about their pocket books that what same sex couples are doing. Before, Bush didn't have as much stuff going on so he went by the old standbys. Immigration, Gay marriage, and abortion. Sadly it was enough to distract voters from more important problems

:(

While it may be a footnote in elections [at best], that is not to say it isn't a problem for some people. Like in Ponce de Leon.

Wow, that's pretty bad. It's fine for people to believe that it's wrong, but to out the student to her parents, suspend students for showing their support, and conduct such a witch hunt? That is absolutely unacceptable. Students should not have to be subjected to such treatment for being themselves, especially when reporting bullying.

I say as long as it doesn't hurt others, it shouldn't be banned.

I'm fine with homosexuality, as long as I don't get hit on by one.

What will you do if that does happen?

Probably just politely hint off that i'm not that way, and if I were, I would date 'em.

But seriously, I would if I were, but I'm not in this world..

I've never understood this position. It's not as if gay people are going to just walk up to you randomly and try getting into your pants and start hitting on you; no more than their straight counterparts. And if they do begin to flirt, a polite but firm denial should do the trick to express your disinterest.

I mean, how would it make people feel if I said, "I'm fine with heterosexuals, as long as they don't hit on me or anything."?

EDIT: Gah, you replied while I was typing. Darn you younguns and your quickness.

Amen to that...it's over used for certain.

You beat me to it, Kinuki. Damn you're quick on the draw.

But definitely, that's got to be one of the most annoying things I hear people say. If I know you're straight, I'm not going to hit on you. If I know you're gay and you have a boyfriend already, same thing applies. It's just common sense, Kho.

Besides, is someone who is ~that way~ does hit on you, they'll stop once they figure out you're hetero.

Regarding the election, I don't think it'll play that huge of a role. Like the others said, the economy and the war are the two big players this year along with environmental policy. By the time gay marriage - if it - comes into focus, it'll either be so late in the game or such a small footnote it probably won't get much attention.

All I'm saying is, it would be a bit awkward. I know this seems like i'm being homophobic, but i'm not against the gay community.

Look in Zhimoda's sig, at the bottom. That's my point of view. About...pretty much everything, actually.
