i have half life one already[ runs on my old tecra that im looking for a new cpu for] and i have gmod allready[friends gave me a disc with it and hl2 on it] but what im really after is to play more mods[like the a fore mentioned zombie panic survival] without needing steam. and the key was used and registered out of the box already [dont buy at zellers]

Well, for your CD key problem, you can either email steam and let them know you got it used and the CD-key was registered already, and they'll probably give you a new one, or buy a new CD. I had to do that with DooM 3, except that instead of the CD-key being used, I just plain lost disk 1.

If you have Half life two (or any source game, really), there are tons of zombie mods you can get. There is zombie panic source, there is zombie master, and a lot more free ones. Goldeneye source and Dystopia can be fun. They're all free to download.

Quick answer: No Steam, no multiplayer, unless you use laggy private servers.

When it comes to playing Steam games, your best bet is to buy it FROM Steam. You won't get the package or anything for you to collect, but you'll never, ever lose it.

Well, sounds like you're [censored] out of luck unless you find the cracks yourself. And even then you risk downloading programs with bad code, embedded 3rd party bugs, viruses, etc etc etc...

viruses are nothing to me now but a minor annoyance. i managed to purge 70 or so of them in one afternoon. and the worst of them prevented me from going to all but the most unheard of websites[no google but had here and some other sites]
but i suppose ill have to wait until the 30th and see what my party brings me :\

xD
it was an adobe product
i think i found a fix anyways, some free mmorpgs that are empty of players xD
spent all night wgeting them and downloading updates on another system[friggen 256K], and couldnt sleep as there was some idiot that left his truck in reverse and it was beeping all night[i kept hearing that sound anyways], and somehow a bunch of random people got ahold of my PRIVATE email address. not even my main, not my side accounts, no the one i use only for msn and only give to very special people. never use it to sign up for anything, and only use it on my laptop so how i got added by 20 random little trolls i really wanted to know[and still do]
its tempting to take those emails and put them in a list to sell to spammers xD

Piracy of PC games = No-no.

There are too many out there doing it. Please, for all that is good with gaming. Stop pirating PC games. The piracy is exactly why less console games come to PC or are designed with PC in mind in the first place.

Valve does it right, reward them with munnies. Not with piracy.

Steam is free...

To play mods however, you need the "Source SDK Base", you'll get it automatically whenever you buy (no free offers) any game from Valve (made by valve).

$5 for HL2 deathmatch btw.

Also: I will not deny the possibility of playing offline games without steam but when you play online, your steamid is verified thus you cannot get around buying said game. (aside from crappy pirate servers)
