I've sure learned never to get refurbished computers, though. I just got an HP, Windows Media Center edition PC, a $1500 computer for $550, and the thing is a piece of...well, you know. I've spent almost what I paid for it on repairs, and it still errors out all the time. What a rip-off.

Okay, this post has no real point, but...

BUY IT NEW!!!!!

=^.^=

I may be unusual, but I built my first computer out of used parts, and it pretty much still works (just not much call for a Pentium 233 anymore). I bought my laptop refurb, and apart from burning the hard drive out, I haven't had any complaints about it either. I'm pretty sure the laptop I use for work is refurbished too, and I've been quite happy with it. So I'm inclined to think you got a lemon, SpikeRulesHell. But as I said, perhaps I'm unusual. ;)

Depends on what else you're going to do with it. If you're going to be putting a lot of other software, especially games on it; you'll start to feel constrained by your hard drive size pretty soon. However, hard drives are cheap ($150 for 750 GB) and are the second easiest upgrade to do to your system, so there's no difficulty in getting more space when you run out. I'd say that you'll be okay for a while; just get a DVD burner and be ready to start burning the older/less watched stuff to DVDs when you get short of space.

For the record, I just moved to said 750 GB from a 200 GB drive a month and a half back. I was short for a long whil, but not catastrophically so, and I also don't like to uninstall things very much, so I had some space I could have gotten out of it if I needed to.

I think Media Center has a few problems, too. I'm sure most of my problems are, as av said, because this specific computer is screwed up, but I don't know if the operating system is completely compatible with everything regular xp is. Or, I could be retarded, I don't know...

The only reason I got it was 'cause it is has 600GB of storage and it has the tv over the internet thing. I mean, come on, you can't say that isn't a deal...

i find if you stay about one to two steps behind everyone else, you can get high end parts for next to nothing when you really look. i did that with my current monster, havent spent more than 140 on all the parts in it now[but spent more than 500 in the past year learning from mistakes] and it is kick [censored] fast for its cost. but dont expect to get a p4p800 @ $20 or a 3.2ghz EE HT p4 for $10, free antec 300W SU or modular cases for $7 unless your me :\[i sucker people in by being poor but eager for parts, then i really get them when i barter for the parts and get an even lower price. tip: carry small amounts of cash and dont tell em how much you have on you. offer half what you really intend to pay, and dont be afraid to walk away]
come to think of it, the only parts in my computer i actually bought brand new[though the proto-p4 was pretty much unused] were my hard drive and dvd burner. and even those i got ata discount price[for that time]
craigslist is another good place for computer parts, some fun stuff on there[got a scsi raid0/1/5 external drive system for $20] and the flea market is another good place. bring old-ish gsm phones there to sell/trade[i traded one there for a gig of ram with a heatspreader on it]
older tech==good :3

I spent 2k on the one that I built (with help from friends). That may seem steep for a custom computer, but it has Quad SLI, 1.25TB HDD (500+750), 1GB NVidia 8800GT, 8 GB RAM and a 5.25 bay toaster.

Generally though, 1-1.5k is a good price for a system.
