On Friday August First both me and my friend bought Soul Calibur 4 for our respective xbox360's, and then me, him and a "friend" of ours (he'll find that funny) all slept over at his house for a sleepover in which soul calibur 4 must have been on for at least fifteen hours, then i went back to my house to play it on my t.v. and so far i have this to say.
The game is graphically impressive compared to the others of its series, and some of the best character's have made an appearance, along with a few new ones. It has a strong versus system, with decent customization abilities, and a healthy roster of characters, including all of the bonus characters you get, and any you make. The story and arcade modes are sweet and short, and the buying of other characters is just hard enough. That being said, I am not impressed by the game.
The characters vary enough to make gameplay interesting, and the fighting style is good, with nice simple gameplay, and complicated deadly combo's, including a new system of destroying armor, and critical finishes ( instant kill moves ) that make it so that you cant simply block the whole match. However, the character balance has been shot, now it seems that all of the characters that have long range have a huge bonus, most noticeably is raphael, who has long enough range that he can keep anyone who has short range at bay, and is quick enough to close in on any slow character. His grabs aren't as powerful as some others, however his combos and just overall attacks are unbelievably strong. Other strong characters are Mitsubishi, Yoshimitsu, Kilik, and others. On top of that, the character customization seems completely worthless to me, not because its not useful, but soul calibur is a game where you contest movesets, when you modify characters, it just seems like your changing too much of the game too me. And the create a character is a joke, because all your doing is taking an already premade character a new model, as you have to select someone else's moveset. I haven't tried the online yet, however i doubt much will be different. I am a fan of the Yoda character, however they have made him fairly cheap, along with the apprentice character.
Now, if this is your first soul calibur game, you will most likely love it, providing of course, that you are into fighting games, however, for those of you who ( like me ) loved soul calibur 2 you will find that soul calibur 4 is of no comparison.
