*points to the title* That's apparently what my optometrist says I have. From what I can understand, it's a continual degradation of the shape of the cornea, which translates into a constantly changing prescription. I guess I'm lucky, because it's rare and all that, but it's not exactly something I want. From what I could find doing research, the most common way to correct corneal dystrophy is to remove the cornea altogether and transplant in new ones.

I... don't want sharp things by my eyes. Ever. It's freaky, nasty, makes me shudder, and I would rather have sharp things by my balls than by my eyes. Dead serious. It's just an ick-factor beyond all ick-factors for me.

Corneal dystrophy is, in most cases, not sight threatening even if it goes untreated, but quality of vision will drop off at some point when I'm older. To what degree, it's anyone's guess right now. They have me on these anti-allergic eyedrops that'll keep me from rubbing my eyes until my next appointment in a month (when my allergies flare up, my eyes itch like all hell). By then my corneas *should* be healed up of all these scars I've apparently put in them.

So... fun stuff. I guess this is what I get for not having a flu or cold in the last two years.

Bugger, FastChapter; you're having terrible luck these days. Between your foot and this? A man could get discouraged with all that.

So is there a solution that doesn't require being stabbed in the eyes? I mean, that's terrifying. I'd hope to be doped up on some crazy drugs if there were going to be scalpels cutting into my eyes.

Hell, man, you must've pissed SOMEONE off... Well, since it's not going to make you go all pitch black on us, my first question is: How bad is that drop off? I assume, pretty bad?

From what I've heard, a lot of eye procedures don't have the person put under, but they do drug them up. Person is usually awake when it happens, just get medicine that makes you not care heh.

What I'd do is, I'd demand an IV drip of the strongest sedative they can legally give, and let them cut away to their hearts content, and wake up with bandages over my new eyes. But, that's just me.

That's a tough break man. I'm glad I only have myopia, no sharp things there!
I think you should try and get replacement Robot eyes. I'm sure your health insurance covers it.

I dunno, eyes seem kinda important. I think you should let them cut a li'l. Just make sure they drug you properly.

*optimism!*

What's nitrous for, after all? :P

I've been thinking of getting a new set of eyes in a few years. Maybe for my thirtieth. Lasers make everything better!

What material do they make corneas out of? Or would you be getting dead guy corneas, FastChapter?

I want dead guy corneas!!!

Wikipedia wrote:
In cases where there have been several graft failures or the risk for keratoplasty is high, synthetic corneas can substitute successfully for donor corneas. Such a device contains a peripheral skirt and a transparent central region. These two parts are connected on a molecular level by an interpenetrating polymer network, made from poly-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (pHEMA). AlphaCor is an FDA approved type of synthetic cornea measuring 7.0 mm in diameter and 0.5 mm in thickness. The main advantages of synthetic corneas are that they are biocompatible, and the network between the parts and the device prevents complications that could arise at their interface. Although the probability of retention is less than that of donor corneas, it does not carry the risk of diseases that could be transmitted through donor tissue. Another difference is the price; synthetic corneas usually cost about $7,000, while processing fees for donor corneas run about $2,800.

Ehh, I'd go synthetic...

XD Jeez, no I don't want dead-people eyes.

I dunno how far the dropoff in vision would be until it happens, but from what my optometrist said, I don't think it'll be horrendous. I'm hoping it's just yet another reason for me to have to get new lenses in my glasses every year. Wouldn't be too far off normal for me anyway.

Yeah, and that's the reason I don't want cornea transplants happening. Being aware of a scalpel slicing off a part of my eye would be enough to make me gag in my sleep. Gross gross gross gross gross. Put me to sleep, spoon out my eye, and do what you have to do. I don't wanna see it.
