This was triggered by some of the final posts in my previous thread.

I'd often wondered why there was no spam board, or at least crazy randomness board. You see, pretty much every forum I had gone to had one, this is the first I'd been to without one and I'd like to know why it's portrayed as "Bad" here.

Now, if one does not like spam, and sees a spam board, it's not that hard to ignore said board. I see it all as senseless fun where you can go to post and have fun without having to worry about rules (within reason).

People posted at the end of the topic that spam is bad, and now my only question is "Why?"

I'm going to use an argument made by another forum's moderator, but likely:

Spam boards draw in people with no interest in the comic. This is a board for people who are fans of the Twokinds comic. Having a board where maybe half the members don't read the comic is a waste.

I see. But as a counter-argument, why would people with no interest in the comic have any motivation to even look at the forums unless directly linked to them?

no

most of the spam around here takes place in the "newb" area, we do not need any more.

This topic isn't asking for one, I'm merely trying to figure out why it's portrayed as "bad" here.

I'm well aware it's not going to happen, I'd just like to know why.

Because if you create a Spam board, you're just inviting people to swarm in who have nothing tangible to contribute to the forum. You don't want to have fifty people run in and say, "Nice comic but HEY WHO HATES THIS POLITICIAN I KNOW I DO LOLOLOLOLOLOlloo1o1!!"

That's what our Ranting Board is for, anyway.

Thanks.

I have to agree with Luca. Let's spin the question on it's head. What's the justification for having a Spam thread or board? Let's even say that it's one rigged not to increase post count. Is it just so that you can scream idly at the walls and pass on pointless videos or images that you've found? I'd say that's what your own blog would be good for. We already see enough of that here.

Since we don't have one, I'd say that the pressure for justification lies on the group who supports the creation of the thread. They're the ones who have to fight inertia.

-- Well...That was a surprise. --
Luca's comment which I was agreeing with was simply asking what the importance of a spam thread really was. Why do we need a place to collect the random detrius of the Internet?

Our spam boards take the form of forum games. After fifty pages or so they're deleted to make room for new games just to mix it up a bit.

Reasons spam is bad: It is similar to fat on a forum. While a little fat is a very good thing, as it keeps you alive and running, a lot makes you ugly, obese, and is very dangerous for your health.

While some spam allows forum goers to stretch their legs and be themselves without having to be "on topic" A whole board is just a little too much. You'd have a bunch of topics about nothing. Eventually, various forum regulars wouldn't be able to stand the board anymore, because once spam starts, it only grows. Eventually, it would infect all the boards, and drive away everyone that doesn't like spam.

Any one else notice that MOST of the spam on the newb board is caused by RP'ers.
