I figured a book discussion would go here, if I'm wrong, you can wound me.

Has anyone else read a book about this attorney by Erle Stanley Gardner? If you've ever played a phoenix wright game, you should. 90% chance Phoenix is based off of this guy. Perry Mason is an attorney who takes on seemingly impossible cases BUT always gets a not guilty verdict WHILE finding the true criminal. In addition to that, it goes by the ACTUAL court systems, not Phoenix's where the defense is told NOTHING. AT ALL. I'm at the end of The Case of the Spurious Spinster and so far I love it. I'm definitely going to find more.

Detective book discussion! I choose you!
Anyone else read these? Enjoy them? Enjoy the genre?
I love trying to figure out the ending before the end, but probably 60% of the time I fail horribly.

I did not know Perry Mason was a book. By that I mean I've only seen the television series of which I remember very little.

I think its relevant, so I'll answer here. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a video game series on the nintendo DS where you play as a defense attorney. There are four games, but the fourth one is Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. You start each case on foot investigating, looking for clues, talking to witnesses, like a point and click adventure. The next part will be in court, where you cross examine witnesses, and look for contradictions and you have to get a not guilty verdict, all the while you find the true killer (Its ALWAYS a murder case). Most cases have the case over three days, broken up into
1. Day 1 - Investigate
2. Court
3. Day 2 - Investigate
4. Court
You get the idea. The game has great humor and its a lot of fun. I highly recommend it.

Now..Whats this about a TV series? and Matlocks?

I don't know too much about them but I'll say what I know. Perry Mason was an old television series from the black and white era and I assume what he does would be the same as in the books. Matlock is another court show starring Andy Griffith in his much later years playing a defense attorney, I think. That's basically all I know. You can always wiki it.

Perry Mason was awesome...well, in the original series...the later TV specials were kinda sad...

...and the detective who really did all of the work, Paul Drake, was THE MAN...

I'll have to hunt this down. Can't seem to find anything good on youtube. And the book (at least the one I read) didn't really go into Paul Drake much, when he does something, Mason's pretty much just like "Paul, go find out as much as you can about this, and get people working on that, and find this here thing." And the next time he showed up, it would be done and he would have a lot of information to tell Perry

Yeah - that's how the TV show worked as well - Perry would be working the courtroom, based only on his hunches, and right at the end, Drake would hand him a manilla folder with EVERYTHING HE EVER NEEDED in it, and it'd be all over. Perry was the showman and mastermind, but Drake got the job done. Every time.

The Matlocks let you see some of the footwork being done, and sometimes, that was downright hysterical. I've always liked Andy Griffith, and felt he did a decent job following in Perry's footsteps.
