I think I'm asking in the right board. Oh well. I need help discerning something. I'm having hard time trying to tell whether a sword is real or not. I happen to know that this one is real (thank goodness).

I'm just having a problem telling if the other sword I have is real or not. Any help at all will be uh....well, helpful. Thank you for your time.

And yes, I know the shirt is stupid.

It looks rather shiny, and from my limited knowledge, that denotes a practice sword of aluminum or something.

Is it heavy?

Also: I am clearly no expert, so if someone that actually IS pops up, feel free to ignore me.

What do you mean real? Do you mean like a replica? Or is it a prop? Do you want to know if it's made for killing people? What?

The kind that could kill people Spiff. I would never use a sword to kill another person. I'm just using it for sword practice in case the need ever arises. It's kind of hard to tell if they really are real. The new I'm getting on my birthday is a samurai sword. I think it might be a replica, but it's not easy to tell. Do swords ring when you tap them with something metal?

Oh, you like guns, too? I agree, swords are too much of a pain. I prefer to just snipe them from 100 yards. How about you? Are you a long-range guy, or an up-close, pour-lead-into-them guy?

...what?

I'm also confused as to what the OP wants to know...if the sword was used by an actual samurai? ...or that it was handmade by a swordsmith? ...or that it is simply made solidly enough to be somewhat useful in personal defense?

The first two are easily determined: Is the person giving you this new sword selling their house to pay for it? If not, then it's likely not handmade or historical.

The third is pretty difficult to discern, and relies on a lot of factors...techie stuff like the blade's metal composition...the tempering process used...if it is full-tang or half-tang...

Funny thing is, the shinier and prettier it is, the less likely it is that it is useful...some of the best blades look weird and dull...

But that's what I do!!! ^^

Well, I mean, the best way to find out if it's usable is to use it in a mock duel. I don't have much experience with usable swords, though. And if there's a chance that it's not usable, fighting with it isn't the best thing to do, for the sword's health...and for yours, I would suppose...

Take it to a specialist, they're everywhere. And no, the shirt's awesome. =^.^=

I thought it was simple enough, but now I have to make myself sound like an idiot. I cannot take a picture of it at this time, but it looks pretty neat. It might just be decorative because I had got a good look, and flicked it. All it made was a dull tone. I wanting to know if there might be swords that, if flicked, make a dull sound, and, if tapped with something metal, will sing a song. Note: I'm getting this sword as a birthday present, which isn't too far away.

@Spike
I have a low affinity for guns. I meant that I wouldn't use it on a person unless it was a burgler who broke into my house. You may think I'm some kind of nut, but I think it more honorable to use a sword. And thank you for saying the shirt is awesome. I look like a bum to myself.

Nah, I was just messin' with you, I'm an expert at misinterpreting people's words and throwing them back.

Either way, with the sword, I'd take it to a sword smith when you get it. It's the safest way to determine the best use for it-wall decoration, or spleen decoration.

Lol! :) I sure hope their is a sword smith near by. I live in the most North-Eastern of Tennessee. I'd rather have spleen decoration than a wall decoration.

:oops: Ok, so I do like swords that can kill. That just means it makes it that more exhilarating to practice with. Once I get a job, and have some money I'll go and search for a weapon smith. That's right, I'm jobless. :cry:

@platypus
YES! SWORD FTW!!
