Aw, I was just about to post this, but ruscfox distracted me with sexy Alaric/Keith fan-drawings. :P This is a wonderful day and a monumental victory. It'll undoubtedly be appealed to the (predominantly conservative) U.S. Supreme Court, so be prepared for it to be overturned, but the spirit behind the victory is still a major milestone.

Fabulous party hats for everyone! *hands rainbow-adorned hats out and puts on on himself*

Been waiting to see this topic since I heard the news earlier today.

I say "wait and see." Let's not forget that the last time, it only lasted a couple months. As I understand it, the ruling is largely about language use -- existing language in the Californian Constitution caused ambiguities with Proposition 22, so they struck down the proposition. Since California already provided same-sex unions that were virtually identical to marriage, I understand that was a big part of the decision as well (so, in this case, making it "marriage" provides mostly an effect on federal level recognition).

Huzzah! I've never been to america, so I don't really know much about politics and how hard it is for gay couples over there, but even I know that many states are very conservative. So yeah, hooray for California! May the rainbow shine or some corny saying like that :D

(Come to think of it... I don't even know jack about how gay marriage is handled here in austria. Shocking, I should read the news more often :/ )

The fact that the ban's been lifted twice already is proof enough that things are going forward. If it gets appealed again, we'll appeal the appeal. Then they'll appeal our appeal of their appeal, and we'll appeal their appealed appeal that got appealed by our aw hell let's just [censored] them all in the earholes so they have something better to [censored] about!

It's finals week, I'm entitled to my crazy.

I've never really understood why there wasn't civil unions for gays.

Yeah, getting religions to provide marriages, I could see that being a fight, but why the hooplah over civil, government rights recognized unions? Which is it separate?

Your guess is as good as ours. *shrug* A lot of people just find the thought "icky" or they believe it's wrong according to their religion, so they're entitled to tell us how to live. Or maybe it's something else entirely. It's hard to say.

I'll fight to keep churches and other religious institutions from being forced to conduct gay marriages against their will, though. The principle of separation of church and state is a two way street, and protects the church as much as it does the government.

Edit: Dammit, I post this and three more new posts pop up before mine!

I think the problem people have with even civil unions stems from religion and/or plain fear of things that are different or "icky." For the deeply religious, and I'm speaking on behalf of a few of my relatives, it doesn't matter if it's via government or via the church. It's a sin to them and they want to prevent it. Since last year, I have had issues seeing eye-to-eye with them over family dinners. Yay.

But in reality, what is the harm? Two people live happy lives. It's not like once gay marriage is legalized nationwide, the world is going to be forced into some kind of endless, well-lubed red-light district. For the people that I know, you say "gay," they think "gay sex." Enter the "icky" factor for a lot of people, and the irrational fear of accepting something new.

I'm just glad to see this kind of progress being made again. Gov. Terminator even said that though he's opposed to gay marriage on a personal level, he's not going to use his political power to overturn any rulings. Good to hear from a guy who could just as easily drop the veto stamp on a sheet of paper and throw things down the [censored] again.

I think I love you. :D That's an awesomely sane viewpoint. I'm glad someone shares it. Quite personally, I have revised my views recently. I have no problems with gays getting all the legal benefits of marriage through civil unions and being recognized by the government as married.

Thank you! :) Just as I don't want the church butting into my life, and treading on my toes, by telling me what I can and can't do, I don't want the reverse to happen either. Live and let live, right?
