I think it's fine of Tom to ask for a donation drive in his time of need. And there are many of happy and willing people who want to help including me. But I think it's not honorable to not put a "goal" such as 1,900/2,500
somthing to let us know how much you really need. If your attitude is to get as much money as we are willing to give then you are not being fare. Well, frankly put.... Dont ask for more then you need!

I figured he did establish a goal. Initially it was just $x/$100. We've far surpassed that, so it's not so much tracking what he wanted any longer, so much as it's now just recording the generosity of his readers.

I also don't really see how it's not being "fair" to ask for whatever we'll give. That's how having a job works -- I have a minimum amount that I'll work for, but I don't have a maximum. I want as much as I can get for my hard work. How is it different when a webcomic artist does the same? Many have donations up all the time and report nothing about what they get. Is that unfair? The only webcomics I see with regular goals are the ones who run donations every month, so they have a monthly goal to reach or they have trouble paying their bills (in theory). Is it unfair to accept whatever people are willing to pay for what you do, even if you believe they are overvaluing your work? Are events like "wallpaper wars" unfair because there is no "magic number" where one side or the other wins? I fail to see how this is so drastically unfair to those who are willing to donate to Tom. If you wish to donate, would you not do so no matter what? Where does "fairness" enter into generosity?

No one is forcing you to donate.

I think what I'm trying to say is... Cry more.

There is a problem with posting a goal, and that is that donations taper of dramatically afterwards.

One of the comics I read did something like that. She couldn't pay her tuition, and was going to need a second job to pay it. This would have almost completely stopped the comic from coming out. So she asked us readers for help, since we'd suffer too if she had to get another job.

She set the goal for 500, saying that was the bare minimum, also stating that she really did need more, but 500 would be scraping by.

She raised 600 in three days.

After the goal was reached, and she replaced the bar, showing how much we'd given her after that, the donations slowed. She got 20 bucks in one month. She did need a bit more, but at least she didn't need to get another job anymore.

If Tom had said "1000 will cover the car repairs" he'd have gotten 1000 pretty quick, but I think the donations would taper off after that. He said he was broke. We give him 1000 for the car thing, but he now has no money for food, housing, or other things (if he needs it) since all we covered was the car. Remember, he has no money.

So by posting a goal, you pretty much limit yourself to the bare minimum that will get you by, however uncomfortable and hard it would be to work with.

I really wouldn't care if he DID just try to beat as much money out of us as he could. I've got $200 sitting in a jar by my bed that I would have been happy to give him 2 days ago. Unfortunately, that was before my computer crapped out for good. Like I said, empty promise, but I'll make him a million some day! =^.^=

It's because it seems like you are trying to make Tom out as a bad guy. That ain't cool in these forums buddy.

(Bit off there)

Tom isn't forcing you to donate. Tom isn't forcing you to throw money into the air and yell "I'VE GOT MONEY, YOU HAVEN'T" either.

Guys- he made a second account just to make this post so you know he was expecting some crap for this - or he forgot his login information (Well actually he has 3 accounts under his current IP but im not going to list em). Point is Tom really wasn't sure how much everything was going to cost, and Im pretty sure he was curious as to how quickly it would go up as soon as he asked just like most people are. He doesn't have to tell people how much he's getting at all so why you have a problem with not setting a goal I really don't know.

But you cant make a thread and then tell us to forget it - it doesnt work that way. You should also know that voicing your opinion doesnt mean everyone will agree with you especially when its an unpopular one and I really don't see the point in even saying it.
