Here's a tip:

Unless it's from an official provider of Anime (And, most likely, charging money for such anime), odds are it's illegal to download it. The Anime you're downloading may have been bought legally, and legally put onto their PC, but them giving it away for free (Or, worse, selling it) is illegal.

What site are you attempting to download Anime from?

Its probably illegal but then again there are lots of internet piracy and people to tend to download it anyway despite the fact its illegal.

Did you pay for it? - Yes!
Did you get it free? - Illegal!

Does anyone ever do anything about it if you download something illegally? - NO!

If you're not sure about it, don't do it.

Usually I thought it was illegal if you SOLD it. Not if you distribute it for free.

Not sure. Laws are funny like that.

Actually I know from first hand experience that some anime's are distributed for free by the producers themselves.

The naruto Anime is a good example. The ones that air it also put it online the same day and put a translated version online the next day.

Here's a bit of advice. Always assume it's illegal, unless you can verify for 100% that its illegal. Torrents and Sharing programs and such are almost always illegal versions.

Actually, I think it is perfectly legal so long as some company hasn't licensed it. There's a website I watch fansubs on, and they actually get some of their content directly from the people making the anime. It's perfectly legal to download anime until it is licensed for dub in your country.

At least as far as I know.

Sorry you have been mislead- its just too much work for Japanese distributors to hunt down, and cost too much to sue, the people releasing fansubs. The only reasons they dont shut them down before they are licensed in the respective country is because they are more likely to be sued by the group that has the license in their country than those from another, AND because the purpose behind fansubs is NOT to replace the need for licensed anime but for a faster way of receiving them AND also very important- for those animes that will not be licensed.

Anime wasnt that popular in the states oh so long ago- so getting it licensed and translated meant it had to be really popular. Thanks to the internet fansubs could be spread quickly and increased the demand for Anime VHS and DVDs- thus more were licensed and yay! We have anime. Still not all of it is released in America (and other countries)!

Just download it, and if the anime-cops come to your house tell them it was your pet dog. You'll have enough time to escape once they do the classic anime-fall-over-in-surprise bit.

Sage, I love how you pop us really randomly and in the most strange of threads... It's a little bit hilarious, and kinda hot...

Wait...

XX + XX = awesome

XY + XY = ...whoops.

And yeah, I just wouldn't download it. You can get a bunch of animes on veoh.com, and I think it's legal to download them (you need the veoh video player, but its free). I've been trying to find a buyable copy of Tokyo Mew Mew for ages now, and nobody seems to sell it, so I resort to this site.

I need to get my BitTorrent back up and running, come to think of it. Never reconfigured it after I reformatted my computer last semester.

if anyone wants a user of these services opinion on the subkect [not that anyone likely does], i say, if you can find it on Tv, and you pay for TV, or have a teevo or whatnot, why not download, less trouble than re-arranging your life to watch a show thats only on once a week in the middle of the day/night :\
so long as you dont go round selling it as yours or claiming rights to it[what else is a disclaimer for right?
and yus, i do download anime, but only what i know is avaible on my TV listings at one point or another :/, if theres a movie or normal show thats on and i want to watch it but its while im at school, then i will probabally download that too[not ofton since my net sucks >.o] i also download it if i have a copy of it but my copy is damaged[im bad with keeping dvds in shape at times...they get transported a lot and loaned a lot]

Right, for my two 1923 Deutsche Marks

1. If it's on the internet, Free, and not part of the OS(Open Source) Revolution, it's probably not legal to download.

2. If it costs money, it is more than likely legal, but you're paying for it.

3. After downloading music and movies off of torrent sites, I'd not worry and get it for free.

4. I cannot think of anyone I know who has gotten caught downloading stuff illegally, and half the people at my school do it.

5. I'd probably be downloading it right now if I liked Anime.

WARNING ABOUT VEOH:
According to their TOS, if you download a video using the player, and veoh decides its copyright material and removes it, the player can and *will* DELETE it from your computer! Obviously, if you move the file out of the Veoh dir, or even perhaps delete it from the Veoh 'library', then it won't. I lost a few videos that way, but as I had read the fine print, I didn't lose everything.
