If you have an HD TV, rent Dead Rising. If you like it (Which most people do), buy it and enjoy.

If not, rent out some of the other suggestions here, and follow the same strategy.

I don't really like buying stuff for the 360, because I think it's a waste of cash, especially since xbox live gold is a prerequisite for your full enjoyment of the whorehouse that is Halo 3. The Orange Box works far better on the PC, but if you don't have one, then it's up to you. Bioshock is fantastic, but lacks multiplayer, so one accustomed to Halo Multiplayer will find it boring after a while. Assassin's Creed is also fun, but gets really boring if you're looking for something heart-pounding or epic. It's also frustratingly simple and easy. Oblivion and Mass Effect are good long term choices, but I'd recommend Oblivion for the PC, because that's where all the mods are right now. Getting it for the 360 means missing out on mountains of custom user content, same with the Orange Box. Which leaves COD4, Guitar Hero, Rock Band [I'd get this first] and a whole list of rentals. Oh, and Gears of War isn't too bad either.
