Why too far of a leap? I'm sure it wouldn't be that difficult. After all, you can walk with a limp and talk in a high voice at the same time, Natani doesn't even need to use any of her own abilitys (Save for magic, of course) to do it magicaly.
I think One Strange Cat just missed their negation, since the rest of the sentence context suggests that it should be there.
I thought of another reason I'd suggest that Natani
doesn't use magic to disguise her voice if she thinks she can do it without. Magic isn't free for Natani. In pretty much any environment, Trace can tap the magic of the world and the living things around him, making magic more or less "free" for the Templar. The Keidran cannot do this -- they rely on having mana stones, magic stored for use. I'm guessing that this is probably true for the Templar while they're on the ocean too, or the mana stone merchant in the city they sailed from doesn't make any sense. Natani's reserve of mana stones is limited, so without some input on how much magic she can cast with a stone (we know that big spells, like teleport, evidently need a whole stone to power, but we don't know how her enchantments, like her scent disguise or her lock spell, drain the stones). Logically, she'd only use magic when she needs it, because the resource that she has for it is limited. That's why I think she wouldn't disguise her voice magically if she was practiced enough to speak in a close approximation to a male voice.
