OK, my last topic on here was aasking for help because I wasnt connecting to my router from my internet adapter. Well, after a few months of perfect connections, its now gone south again. I keep getting randomly disconnected every 5 minutes or so. Why does my computer hate me?

Mmm..Probably not your computer, it's probably the Internet that doesn't like you.

What have you tried with it so far, so we don't end up just suggesting things that you already know won't work. Is this a problem with only your computer's internet access or everybody in the house's? Right now, I'm thinking power cycle everything from your computer through the modem. When my router starts getting spotty about routing packets around or assigning IP addresses, power cycling it usually fixes the issue. Especially since you had no problems and now you're having them again suddenly.

village fool, please be so kind and link us to the thread with your earlier problem. that could make things a lot easier.

So far we can only go guessing here.
If you use a wireless connection, there can be problems on both ends of the connection. Just to note some of them:
  • Hidden SSID ("network name")
  • power management on the client side
  • the WLAN AP is set to automatically find a free channel

all three of them can cause random disconnects.

Apologies if I explain into too much detail or go over things you already know, I just want to be clear.

To "power cycle" is to turn the power off, let it sit for thirty or so seconds, and turn the power back on. For a modem or router, just unplug it, give it some time, and plug it back in. The settings are all saved in a Flash EEPROM, so you aren't going to lose anything on a modem or router by unplugging it (Flash ROM is electronically erasable and programmable read-only memory, so it does not require electricity to store data). By unplugging the system and letting it sit for a while, you let the RAM clear, since RAM is volatile memory (it requires electricity in order to store data). Restarting your computer does largely the same thing for the computer. Just like your computer can gunk up after being left on for a while, the same thing is often true with your router, it just usually takes a lot longer.
