It's just a flavor piece. Like in a Ranma graphic novel, in between chapters you'll find pictures of Ranma-chan wearing frilly girly stuff. It's not because Ranma's actually wearing that or would wear it - it's fan service, essentially. Or it's like when you're reading a fantasy-based manga and the image between chapters shows them wearing modern clothes and in a modern setting. It's just something fun.
Bonus points for mentioning Ranma.
It may be pure eye candy, but I like the idea that at some point in the future the four of them have a shack out in the middle of nowhere, mucking around in the snow and leaves, free from the mutually exclusive allegiances that are screwing with them at the moment...
