Okay, sorry, she doesn't look sad, and sorry to be a newbie, but has the picture to the left of the comic on the main page been discussed/explained elsewhere? She seems to be dressed so... things... are showing normally. Future? Past?

It's just a flavor piece. Like in a Ranma graphic novel, in between chapters you'll find pictures of Ranma-chan wearing frilly girly stuff. It's not because Ranma's actually wearing that or would wear it - it's fan service, essentially. Or it's like when you're reading a fantasy-based manga and the image between chapters shows them wearing modern clothes and in a modern setting. It's just something fun.

Bonus points for mentioning Ranma.

It may be pure eye candy, but I like the idea that at some point in the future the four of them have a shack out in the middle of nowhere, mucking around in the snow and leaves, free from the mutually exclusive allegiances that are screwing with them at the moment...

Yeah, I like that. Maybe someday in Orchard Town (??? I forget the right name ???). Since it's snowing, and Orchard ??? is south, maybe this is set in the southern hemisphere of this world. Or maybe I'm thinking too hard :-)
