Why is it there are so many fallen angel, vampire, werewolf, et cetera stories in the last 5-10 years or so?

Now, don't get me wrong, I liked the first few I saw, but it feels like now that's all there ever is. Why must it be a demon, or a fallen angel (basically the same thing)? Why can't there be any un-fallen angels? Gandalf pretty much was one, and if you don't believe me, here's a quote- "I am a servant of the sacred fire, wielder of the light of Anor- dark fire shall not avail you, flame of Udun!" I don't see anyone complaining about him.

This is obviously, my own personal opinion, I just don't understand why they're so famous. And why so many people buy them. I miss Gandalf. He is still infinitely superior, as a character, than any vampire, werewolf, fallen angel or demon the last 10 years of media has offered. I stand by that.

Well, I think that the whole "fallen angel" stuff comes vaugely from some religious affiliation. Just something for a person to dabble in, without getting too much into an actual religion. Many religions talk about fallen angels (Genesis, in the Bible for instance), and this is just another outlet for peoples curiosity. Maybe its actually a signal to the rise in religious movements. Or maybe I'm just on crack.

And Gandalf, he's cool because he is based in a written book, as opposed to an anime or manga that many other characters nowadys are based in. I know that some of them are in books as well, but a large majority of them are in said mangas and animes.

They are strong cultural memes. End of story.

People are fascinated by the darkness... always imagining things up that reside within. The idea of something perceived as 'evil' or 'ominous' strongly plays to the human imagination, and the idea of such creatures as Vampires... well... they stimulate our need for the mysterious.

The trick is... you're not looking hard enough. If you want stories about regular angels... there are plenty. There's a story for everything you could ever imagine needing a story for. You just have to look in the right places. Besides... if you somehow manage to find the -one- story never written... write it yourself... and give the rest of us something fun to read.

-Case Closed-

But often, they're not perceived as evil. I think the majority of these stories are rip-offs of rip-offs of The Dark Elf Trilogy (which I thoroughly enjoyed), and the people writing them are trying to leech off the franchise.

Heh. Angels are pretty damn mysterious too. You can read all 1000+ pages of the the Bible and you won't find very much about them.

What you say? Gandalf's only cool because he's in a book? That's stupid. Your stupid, stop spreding your stupidity stupid. Gandalf is cool because he's a good character, not because he's in a book apposed to a manga. Manga's can have good characters as well. I just don't think some people take as much thought into characters in mangas as Tolkien did with his.

Because they are cool and people now-a-days have no imagination. =P

Where's a Tolkien fanatic when you need them? Someone who managed to plow through the Silmarillion could probably tell you what he is. I tried to read it, I really did...

Why all the vampire/werewolf/fallen angels these days? Most of the ones I've seen, they're the main characters and they're either turning good or were neutral to begin with, instead of being horror movie fodder. It's putting a new twist on an old story, like all those modern-day-Shakespeare movies a while ago. The first round were alright, but you know what happens when something in Hollywood is moderately popular? That's right. Attack of the Clones.
