Oh, it's just a game set in a world that's completely falling apart.
The Empire of Belinia: A formerly glorious nation spread across most the globe. When the economy collapsed after many years of flourishing peace, martial law was declared to ensure that the society itself didn't collapse too. Sadly, because the local militaries of the individual city-states were not strongly allied to one another... the ranks of the thinning Imperial Army were not enough to stop them from severing all ties to the Empire and declaring independence. The Empire, though weakened, is still a technological marvel of it's time, with twenty-foot solar-powered battle-mechs and firearms that any commander would envy.
The Illasian Confederation: A coalition of the larger former city-states of the Empire, the Confederation is devoted to preserving the peace and independence of all nations across Illasia (largest continent on Argia). Though they have no political ties with the Empire, the Conferderation still considers the Empire an important ally, and both are united in the cause of fighting the impending doom to come. The Confederacy relies on both magic and technology to survive.
The Kingdom of Twilight: Situated in just the wrong position on the globe, the sun never sets nor rises on this blasted wasteland. Too far north to accommodate farming, the people of this nation have survived for centuries by hunting the local Dragon population. They have a strong magical ties to the planet, and are capable of using the power of Argia against their foes. To this end, the Twilighs have invaded Illasia and the other known reaches of the empire, hunting down and slaying those infected with the now-rampant Tetraplaga.
Etherae: The land of Etherae is devoted to the many Mages Guilds, as well as being the home to a large number of creatures found nowhere else. As a result of being the home of the Ethergate, the Continent of Etherae is a spawning pool of new life, constantly exposed to the Energies of Creation.
More to come:
