Sorry if there is a topic already on this (couldn't find it is there is one). I was wondering what people thought of them for drawing on. I have been thinking of purchasind one but my dad said I needed to learn about them first. I'm asking ya'll since you guys don't point people wrong. The one in particular I am looking at is this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000C4DVX/qid=1124808542/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/102-6618575-4116165?v=glance&s=electronics
Really appreciate it!

I have the blue one of that and looks different too. It is quite hard to draw on. you need it on full screen or something. for example, your cursor is pointed at the center of a 3x4 square in the center of your screen. you put down the pen at the top right corner, the cursor will jump to the top right corner of the screen and not the square. :shock: I gave up on using that in just a day and I prefer hand drawing. also it is meant for you to place pics so you could trace. its USB too. :shock:

I dont think Stealth Fighter has any real experience with a Tablet. It does take a bit of practice but it is not hard to do. Also Tablets are not made for tracing- but it is possible on any tablet to trace something. The tablet you linked is alright for beginners but the work space is rather small- some people have no problem with that others do. The active area on that is 4inches by 5 inches-- that means that a dollar bill's long side is longer than both its width and length- two dollar bills can completely cover your work space on the tablet (to give you an idea of actual size.
I do my comics now all on a tablet- i also do all my coloring with a tablet- i also do digital paintings all with a tablet and so do the pros and whenever you work on a project involving a texture for a 3D model it is almost always done using a tablet.

So heres the real question-- Do you want to do art just for fun or do you want to make a job out of it? Do you have the money to buy one of these tablets and if you choose not to go into an art field of work you wont feel like you wasted your money? Do you have enough money to buy a larger and or better tablet? And are you going to spend time working on actually learning how to use your tablet?

They are wonderful for people serious about their art but not something every person should have just because they can.

Wacom may be your big name company with all the pretty flashy lights and wee bam slap things, but i wouldnt buy it for a first tablet.
For 50$ more, you can get the http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00083Y17M/qid=1123795307/sr=1-12/ref=sr_1_12/104-2625010-9691113?v=glance&s=electronics
Addesso Cyber Tablet. 12x9 active area. Much easier to use, and in my opinion it is just as good as any wacom without the huge price tag

Shading....soo much easier with a tablet... At least in terms of using my Optical Rollerball lol. And yes it does take a little bit to get used to it. So if you plan on getting one, don't give up on it. It's like some people that use the standard mouse can't use a rollerball, but if you just keep using it, you adjust. Same thing with a tablet, just takes a little bit of use and effort to get used to it.

You stated that your question was about drawing on it, did that entail shading and coloring as well? Or just in place of standard pencil drawing? Not sure I'd blow so much money on one if it was just to make sketches. So...I guess it all comes to down to what you plan to do with it overall. :D Or if you had enough money to fling around? lol. Yeahhh....^.^;;

I got the sapphire version of that model and have been rather happy with it. Now as Sage said, some people will not like the limited amount of space. I don't mind at all, I usually draw small and write tiny as well. I didn't want to spend a ton of money as well, so I'm very happy with my choice, though it may not be right for you. If you tell us what you want to do with it we may be able to help you out more.

Well, thank you very much ya'll. I ordered it today. It's supposed to be here in 5-9 days. Then I'll know what I think of them. It seems like a good thing since I like doing stuff on the computer.

Just an update for you guys. I got the tablet last week and was practicing using it. I LOVE this thing. Much much easier to use than a mouse, for anything I think. http://www.cassiestember.8k.com/art/chibi.html
The picture in the lower left is the 1st I drew entirly on the computer. Still getting used to the nifty programs that came with the tablet. That I think is the hardest part so far.
