You know what, I don't think 2 days away warrants my thread getting locked and sent to a "Coming and Going thread". Specially when we were on board with conversation.

Anyway, as I said!

Welcome back, Such is campus life, right? Nothing works until the semester begins, and even then you're hard-pressed to get Maintenance to come and fix the problems.

Well its not so much that. The college that I go to has just become a University. But we have a lack of resources because of location. That's what happens when you build a college in the middle of a mountain. They just put in Comcast internet but they did not put enough modems for people to use. Max is 20 people a modem and we have at least 50 to 70 people a floor in the dorm that I am staying in. And my internet won't even work. Secondly, I paid another 1000 dollars that was included in the housing for my room to be cleaned and checked out before I moved in. The room was filthy, there were even pot marks on the walls. And the way the toilet leaks is disgusting. It doesn't leak from the bottom, no, that I could handle. It leaks when it flushes because the circulation is off and it spills out the top. So I have to clorox the floor twice a day because I also share that bathroom with my neighbors. I don't know if they've notice the leak and I haven't had the time to talk to them about it. Maintenance won't be here for a while because it is flooding in the Rogers dorm.

I consider this a valid rant because I'm paying for services that I'm not getting add with the stress of regular classes, work, and my room being constantly waterlogged I don't have the time to deal with all of it and I can't get anything fixed at this point. But at least I have someones wireless connection to borrow today.

2 days away does not warrant a thread on any board, period. The Coming and Going thread was created for a reason.

Is this your first year at college?

By the way, this thread for anyone that goes to college that has a hillarious and or horror story about it. -_- God knows I've got tons of both.

Not so many dorm stories (mine is pretty spartan but everything works).

However, I can officially say that every muscle in my body hurts after AFROTC PT Wednesday. T_T I'll be in good shape again if I keep this up. xD

Mostly my crazies have involved classes and whatnot. :o

Our campus allows you to live at home if you live less than 40 miles from campus. My hometown is ~35 miles away so I'm right on the fringe. So no dorm living for me. I've stayed the night in them with guys I know, and I can honestly say I'd go stir-crazy in them. Too many people mulling around upstairs, downstairs, next door. Playing "whats that smell" when you walk into the hallway. Eugh, dorms are evil.

More so bad teachers, advisers, and secretaries than classes here. The case usually being not an experienced teacher doing the class and going one what they've heard or exerts of what they've read without reading the entire book. So basically we have to teach ourselves for the most part. But I'm lucky because the English department here is really good.

Oh trust me, if you're in a four-year college your professors know their stuff. They're college professors, not teachers in a public high school. ;) Most of them probably teach some 300-level courses alongside yours. It's just that most professors specialize in specific subcategories of a subject, so when you get that professor in a class they earned their masters degree to teach, you'll find out how impossible it is to [censored] one of them, :)

Fast hits the nail on the head here. Most college professors are actually very smart... in their specialized fields. But unfortunately, with so many students in college, professors can't just teach the 300 or 400 level classes that they specialize in, but the more general introductory courses as well. Because of that, it's likely that they've forgotten or don't know as well the material of other specialties, hence why it can be easier to b.s. them on assignments.

A good example of this is physics. A professor who specializes in teaching, say, quantum physics will likely struggle having to teach basic Newtonian, classical physics, since that isn't his main field of study. But if you try and b.s. him in a quantum physics course, he'll be on you like yellow on a banana.

My Adv. Novel Writing (English 385) professor had that same issue, having to teach Composition 101 on the side of our class. He knows the subject but it's such a technical field of writing that he despised it. ;) Made for some very interesting stories for him to tell.

I've got something of a funny story about dorm life...

First, I've got to explain that I stayed in a dorm filled almost entirely with engineers. We stayed in four-person suites, so everybody had their own room, and shared a bathroom and a common room with three other people.

Now, here's the point of the story: You never know quite what's going to happen when engineers get to drinking. We tend to come up with crazy ideas. I heard stories about a group of students who turned their shower into a jacuzzi. I didn't see that one, I just heard about it. But I did see something. Some upperclassmen that I knew got to drinking and decided that it'd be a good idea to increase the floor space of their common room. So they hit up the hardware store for some supplies and lofted it. That's right, they added a freestanding second "floor" to their common room. It was an incredibly solid piece of construction too -- at one point, they had eight people on top of it and it didn't sag or wobble at all. The management hated it. But since it was freestanding and well-built, they couldn't force the students to take it down. It wasn't damaging the room and it wasn't unsafe. They finally called in the fire marshal, who declared it unsafe because it prevented the sprinklers from reaching the floor in case of a fire. The upperclassmen admitted they probably could have modified it to suit the fire marshal's desires, but they decided they'd had as much fun with it as they wanted and they took it down. But for over a month, they had a lofted living room, and a darn good one at that.

My first two years at AUM (junior and senior undergraduate) was the closest I'd ever been to being on my own. The little dorm rooms were solid built brick construction, and I don't remember ever having technical difficulties. But my first dorm mate was a pain in the keister.

She HAD to have music at night (it keeps me up) and she used this aweful air freshner that stuffed me up so badly, I wound up sleeping with my head out our window....in Winter. I was SO GLAD to see the last of her.

After her, it was PARTY TIME, cause my best girl bud (Audrey, still friends, thankya) moved in....and I met Butch (hubby) aaaah, good times, good times.

it was also an instructional time in that I learned I couldn't live on Golden Mushroom soup alone....reality sometimes bites.
