Well, i've been trying to learn how to draw manga with a lot of help from The Complete Idiot's Guide to Drawing Manga. Here's the first thing I drew while trying to learn how.

That is the outline sketch of a figure, obviously.

Edit: Okay... here's some practice eyes:

And some practice ears:

Finally, a practice head:

Now why do two of you hate me?

few problems with first picture (over-long torso, one leg's larger than the other (even taking into account depth and angle). The rest is well done, however (I don't hate you. ^_^ I plead the fourth option)

Your eyes and ears look pretty good to me, for what little my opinion is worth in this arena. However, your figure's thorax is quite disproportionately long. As it stands, his fingers would end at his hip sockets, were his hands hanging down in a relaxed posture, when they should end in the rough middle of the thighs.

TEH GLARE!!!

I agree with Bane, the thorso on the first picture is too long, also, it seems that the right arm is too short and he looks like terminator...wait that isn't bad is it?
practice makes perfect. NOW PRACTICE MOAR!!!!! *whip*

I would just like to say that the bad person outline was the first non-stick figure person I've drawn in like... three years.

I could point out the same thing that's already been said again, but that'd be pointless. lol. I would point out that you said it's the first non-stick person you've drawn in three years. However, even stick figures have proportions. If you were to draw a stick figure with an overly long torso, you'd still see it that way. That aside, the eyes and ears do in fact look fine. :D Head could use a little work, but as long as it's something you want to get better at, I see you being able to improve. :)

Artists are traditionally ruthless and self hating. They will rip a newbie amongst their ranks a new one if they do not immediately prove their ability to be on par with their's. It is a way of coping with their self hate by unloading it on others.

Or they're just being silly. Like GreencoyotE is just telling you that you'll get better with practice. And he's trying to be silly about it. avwolf is always fairly honest, and sometimes blunt, and Fox is also telling you that practice will help, and you need to work on proportions.

They're telling you how to improve. Also a tip: don't take anything they say as insult. Heck, half the time they're kidding if it does sound like an insult. The people here are only trying to help you improve, so take it as a teacher telling you what you did wrong instead of a student telling you "You suck."

You can trust me, I've spent years studying the artist in their natural habitat.

How-to-draw-manga books always seem to be based upon artists with at least a little bit of experience in drawing real people. They expect you to draw people out of stick figures, yet they don't go over the proper proportions; which results in a wacky stick figure that lacks anatomy, then onto wacky body.

My art teacher from last year always told me to not attempt to draw complex figures until I've at least learned the basics of front/side view, and it looks like it's true, 'cause I'm messing up on any non-generic figures all the time. :|

I think anatomy books have the best chance in improving drawing skills, not some how-to-draw-books that oversimplifies the processes in drawing. "Anatomy for the Artists" books are so awesome because of that; if you're stuck at drawing something, you can refer back to that specific part in the book. It gets amazingly complex in some perspectives, though.

This is a doodle I made in the time between me finishing lunch, and the end-of-lunch bell ringing. With some pics I respect criticism and find it helpful, but this is a doodle and I wasn't trying to make a serious picture here, so please only criticise if something is seriously bugging you about it. Also please note that I'm aware of the extremely long neck. So without further ado, here is my doodle, Jim:
