In a breifing room, 6 brave men stand (you). There is a holograph projector in the center of the room, where every chair is facing.

A (human) man in a traditional military uniform enters the room from the back door.
His face is stern, he has a traditional muscle build. He stands in the center and turns on the holographic projector with a remote in his hand.

"Welcome gentleman, I hope you're ready to live the dream many people have wanted to. You have passed all the tests given to you, and you are ready to go out into the stars. I shall make this brief, because I am sure you all have many things you need to do before you leave, and we can't be certain of your return."

He pauses and looks over the crew for the first time. His face shows indifference, sighs and continues talking.
"I see we have an interesting crew, full of diversity. This is very good since you may need to show this, now onto buisiness."

He clicks a button on the remote in his hand. The projector makes a silent wirrr, sound as the room dims. A blue light shows the image of a ship, it doesn't seem to be very big, but there look like there are enough weapons on it to destroy a small space port. A large engine on it, air vents on the tip of it, and sides. Escape hatches are placed on it near the center, and the craft looks like it can hold a large amount of cargo.

The man starts strafing back and fourth, and begins talking.

"As you all are aware of we have completed a sub-ether drive, capable of warping further than our gates are able to. But it is too unstable to put on our flagships, so we need you to go and find what is out beyond our galaxy, if anything. We must know if there are any inhabital planets, other races, if they are friendly, hostile, and so on. Your mission is soully to explore. We here on Earth, and our solar system will be monitering you as far as we can. But our radios can only reach so far. Now about the ship you are taking."

He hits another button on the remote, and the hologram views an image of the cockpit. Its nothing more than five chiars, a captain's chair, navigator, two weapon chairs, a comm chair, and a comm screen that links to the rest of the ship.

"This is your cockpit learn it well."

He flips the switch again, it gives a close view of the weapons.

"Your mission may be a peaceful one but we decided to arm you to the teeth. This is because we have no idea what is to be expected. You have laser guided atomic weapons. Heat sinking missiles, a six basic gatling guns, two laser cannons, and thirty decoy pods. You also have enough ammunition to last many battles."

The slide switches again. This time showing the engine.

"We have perfected the energy cores, made with fission energy. You don't need to worry at all, this should last you a good twenty years with normal use. Our scientists are very proud of this."

The hologram now shows a line of mechanical droids that look like cans.

"This is the mantinence line, they are controlled by the ships AI. If something were to go wrong with the any of the mechanics, that you couldn't reach, or have no time for, these little things will get busy right away. Speaking of the AI, we have programmed a genuis computor. It will serve your needs, answer questions about the ship you need to know, and if you all remember that old tale from ages ago, 2001 I believe it was called; the ship shall never betray you. But we have hit something new, most AI bots we've created so far, had no emotions whatsoever. This is where it differs, your ship is constantly learning much like you would. But it also feels, so be wary of what you say to it. Moving on."

The hologram flickers to a space port near Pluto.

"We do not have the sub-ether drive available for you here, we didn't have the resources or the time to build it on earth. So you will all be putting it on in the Pluto base."

The hologram now shows a picture of a warp-gate.

"You shall use this as means to get there, because if you were to travel normally, it would take a few years. Besides think of it as training for all the jumps you'll be making with this new drive."

The hologram turns off, and the lights start to go on.

"In truth you're mission is mostly diplomatic, to show the world the power of the milky galaxy, and the power of Earth. Your ship, Earth's ship, its serial name is Gaia-I, but you are free to give it whatever codename you wish. Once you make your first jump, we will lose contact with you, leave beacons out with logs on them. This is so when we are ready to move out as a mass we may be able to follow them. I leave you at that, remember return to this space port at 12:00 hours for your launch."

He faces the small crew of the ship and finishes with the phrase: "Any questions?"

The Breifer lets out a large laugh.

"We have home coordinates set for you already, but we imagine that you'll be gone for a very long time. Any other questions?"

Houdini raised his fluffy right hand, but remained comfortably seated,"What are our postitions in the team? Or have they not been decided yet?"

[I propose that we use brackets for comments ( [comment] )]

Adnez is busy examining the image of the ship cast by the projector when he hears the briefer's comment. His ears twich and a slight amount of suspision crosses his face. He waits for Houdini's question to be answered, before asking some of his own, forgetting to raise his paw/hand.

"Just how long do they expect us to be gone? Have they taken into account that time slows down in relation to everything else when traveling at high speeds? And that what will feel like a year for us could be a century on earth? *quieter* I really dont know enough about the drive to make these assumptions. It's been rather hushed. *back to normal* Is it an FTL, [Faster than light, theroretically impossible] or a warp drive of some sort?"

[Lots of questions, eh? :3 An FTL drive would possibly send people back in time, as time supposedly stands still at the speed of light. A warp drive would most likely work by folding space, or jumping to another dimension where space is different, therefore avoiding changes in the speed of time, and many complications in returning home.]

The Briefer looks over what had just been asked, and pauses for a moment.

He looks over at the rabbit.
"Houdini was it... We have decided it may be easier for you to decide who does what. Since you are the ones going out for so long."

After that he walks up to Adnez.
"Sir I do not know those, you seem like the type to study everything around you. Heh, its good you never grew out of your curiosity just be careful of it. As for the scientific facts, I'm not sure how the drive works, but you should get your answers on the Pluto base, they are the ones who built it after all. Anything else?"

[Brackets are nice for comments, but I kinda prefer OOC: (out-of-character), but this will be fine. As for the time constraints, I don't think we should deal with that. Since most of it is A)theoretical B) I don't really understand how rapidly time would change when going at different speeds (though I am aware of it) and C) makes this a little over-complicated. Besides, I didn't think of the theory of relativity when making this up. If you prefer, I could think of some good techno-babble to explain how the two current times are unaffected though.]

OOC:I would imagine It's less like traveling and more like jumping. Using the drive and the gates, we cease to exist in one place and rematerialize in another. This can only be done over a certain distance, and so you just keep hopping from one spot to another until you get where you're going. By the way, I suggest the AI for the ship be female as everyone else is male, plus females have more interesting personalities.

IC:

"Well, I'm ready to go whenever everyone else is." The red and black fluffball said as he finished downloading the ships blueprints from the console onto his palm pilot. He swung his feet up on the projector and started fiddling with the specs, using what resources were listed as being onboard. "I call comms." he added as an afterthought, his full attention on the statistics infront of him. Not a bad little ship, he thought, but it could definetly use some adjustments here and there.

Adnez leans back into his chair for a moment, slightly embaressed at his outbreak. Then, when looking at the cockpit up on the screen again, he finally notices that while there are 6 of them, there are only 5 chairs.

"I've got one last question. There's 5 chairs on the bridge, and 6 of us. Is there another post, or is that 6th person a backup?"

He realizes another thing after he asks his question. Choosing a captian will be quite difficult...

[Going half the speed of light (c) would slow time by half, 3/4 c would be 1/4 normal time, and so on. The theory states that time goes at the speed of light, and that when you move, you take speed away from your speed in time. Thus, you take a proportionate amount of speed from time as you speed rises. Science is always theoretical. Simply the way it works. :3 I like the female AI idea, and a jump/warp drive would negate the effects of near c travel.]

OOC:Ooooo, if that last postition is for an engineer down in the drive room, I so call it. Since I didn't notice the fact that there's 5 chairs and 6 people. Houdini didn't realize it either, but if you tell him theres a seat in engineering he'll call it.

IC:

Houdini hummed a little diddy to himself kept playing with his palm pilot. He was bursting with so much excitement he couldn't sit still. An ultra intelligent AI with it's own personality, he thought to himself. I can't wait to meet it, I wonder what it calls itself? It should be pretty decent at 3-d chess, maybe it could even beat me...I can't wait! He started to bounce a little on his chair in anticipation and eagerness, his feet tapping together in time with his humming.

"I'll let everyone here know right now that I'm no good with all this technology so if we don't run into anything hostile I'll be next to useless. However, if we do find something hostile and it's attacking us, give me something sharp or blunt, it doesn't really matter, and I'll put an end to it's life," the fox said as he looks around the room before focusing his eyes on the briefer, "How much will be getting paid?"

The briefer looks over at the fox.

"Paid you say... Well it will be a hefty amount. But now is not the time to discuss this. There will be a banquet in your honor later at the city hall. I hope you all will come. If you have any family we would like them to come. I shouldn't have to say this, but our biggest political figures will be there, so be on your best behavior. Be there around 7:00 pm, don't be late.

Now you may have a recess until then. Any other concerns can be answered tomorrow, prior to liftoff. Feel free to use this time to get to know eachother."

The briefer salutes the 6 men, then walks across the aisle. The door slides open, and shuts quickly behind him.

*stands up and streches*
well glad thats over with.
*sits back down*
I wonder, a sensitive AI, that could be a bad thing at times couldn't it?
when are we going to discuss the posisions...ah who cares right now lets enjoy the time we have!
*gets up and walks out of room*

Houdini waited only a little while longer in his chair before leaving the briefing room. He wouldn't mind being introduced to everyone, but that could wait for later. He wanted to go visit his family while he was still on the planet, and dispite the briefer's offer he doubted his relitives would be welcome at the party. Any place with a free salad bar had come to fear his numerous siblings with abject horror, and he doubted even a banquet hall could contain the unrestrained energy of hundreds of bunny anthros anyway. His parents would be too busy with the babies, but he might be able to pry Cecil from the death grip his younger brothers and sisters had on her, if only for awhile. Yeah, that's a good idea, I'll invite Cecil.

Exiting the briefing room the fox thought to himself, "I should probably buy a jacket to wear over my vest if I'm going to attend this banquet... or... maybe I'll just buy a darker colored vest since I can barely stand to have even this vest rubbing against my fur."
