so version 4 came out recently and i figured i'd convert over to the new rules since all version 3.5 contnet is now out of print. i took a look through the new books and well i'm honestly a little disapointed.
first of all a lot of content has been removed from the game including several armour types (half-plate, studded leather, breast plate, chainshirt, bucklers, tower shields, splint mail, etc...) this was a massive disapointement alone but there was more stripped content including weapons (many) the spell lists (wizard and cleric were both stripped down immensly).
the new 2 weapon fighting system is messed seriuosly, sorceror is gone from the class list as is barbarian, druid, and bard. gnomes are no longer a core race neither are hal;f orcs, they have been replaced with tieflings and dragon born, both of which i have a huge disdain for. honestly gnome has been a core race for a long time to think they were replaced with something like the tiefling is just sad.
i'll stop my rant; though there are still more issues i have with the new version, and ask what your opinion is, i've heard the game plays well but i just can't get myself to play it not with so many holes in the game i used to know.

Already a thread on this.

Gnomes are no longer a major player race, and were replaced by things like half-demons. Because that made so much sense.

EDIT: One on another forum summarized it best. Basically, 4th Edition is D&D made to play out like a game of WoW.

It's been ages since I've played, and even then I wasn't aware of half of the rules. My friends and I just bullshitted our way through it because it was fun. :P

y'know what that was the exact thought that crossed my mind when i read through the books, "this is like tabletop WOW" it made me very angry, i play DND for deep roleplaying experiences not for hack and slash combat and restricting gameplay. it's a shame wizards has just completely dumped 3.5.

Each version seems to be more noob friendly. I don't understand why they have more then one version, besides the money. I don't play it so much now days anyways, because of technology and all. ; ;

i agree entirely, honestly they don't need to mess with the game most of the mechanics are good, i hate how the game keeps getting simpler and simpler, they've gone to far this time though i think, it's become basicaly world of warcraft really.

What I've been saying 0_o

It's more than just the gameplay, when you look in the book at the styles of items and the pictures in it it all just seems to scream WoW. Dragonborn and tiefling are both wow type races as well.

The reason for all this simplification is to make it more newb accessible. The whole WoWification is because newcomers to DnD primary background to the roleplay genre is world of warcraft.

Howerever, it bones all as oldies.
*Is sticking to 3.5*

*shrug* Wizards is out to get as much money as they can. A glance at Magic: The Gathering should assure you of that. They've made the calculated decision to make D&D more accessible to new, inexperienced players at the risk (and generally cost) of upsetting a lot of old hands. I've started to really view D&D as a "gateway drug" of role-playing. It gets you into the mood, teaches you the ropes. And when you're ready, there are much better games out there to play. I've been saying this for years. Fourth ed just makes it more obvious. ;)

You won't get much profit out of actual roleplaying and such when it comes to the actual thing. They are better off making a video game out of it if they wish for profit. Though I prefer v1, you won't find me doing much else related to the game.

Dude. They already have a D&D MMO. Stormreach, I believe it is. I tried the free trial, and it wasn't bad at first, but they don't really ease you into things much.

It's pretty much "do one of these three quests to go on. Done? Good. This one now. Excellent. Now choose one of these millions of quests that you have no idea how to get to when you do finally get a group. And don't forget the bazillion clans you could join, and you should probably listen to hours worth of backstory before choosing... blah, blah, blah, impossible to find things."

At least, that was my impression of it. I was just friggen intimidated by the utterly massive city that took half an hour of running to traverse and a lack of some sort of objective marker.

Dude, video games cost a [censored] and are a very unsure source of income. Plus, 50 dollars a game for hundreds of thousands if not a million, or 120 for significantly less.

I don't need anything to actually play the game, buying anything to actually do so is a waste.
