Okay, I don't know where else to post this. I'm sure at least some people on this forum play an instrument-I know Ozy playes guitar, and we can't be the only 2... I mean, gee, I'd post on a site that discusses guitars, but I'm a newb, and people would laugh at me. And look what happened to Brian...bummer...

I'm going tom-err, today, I guess (go midnight!) to get some awesome pedalness at Guitar Center (actually, it's just a tuner pedal and some strings...go me?). While I'm there, I want to check out their overdrive pedals. I'm a blues/rock guy. Anybody have any <specific> suggestions as to what I should get?

In addition, it's time for me to upgrade my amplifier. But, as I have mentioned, I know nothing about guitar equiptment. I wanna nice tube amp that doesn't break my bank account. What's the best one I could get for around $1,200-$1,400? Again, I do pretty much any kind of rock, some blues, and a bit of metal. I need an amp that'll scream, whisper, and moan all at the same time (that sounded awesome in my head.); basically, one that'll sound okay no matter what you play.

Sorry if this wastes precious forum space, I'm desperate!

Thanks in advance for anybody's help. =^.^=

First off, I am not a musical instrument person AT ALL, so I may be asking silly or stupid questions.

Anyway, I am wondering: Why a tube amplifier? Looking around, it would seem to me that MOSFET amplifiers are as good if not better quality now, and much cheaper.

I know that the MOSFET amplifier in my stereo puts out what to me sounds crystal clear, and the IC based stuff in my MP3 player and computer sound much clearer than anything else I have seen.

Of course, the only experience I have with Tube stuff is a small amplifier/intercom system I got for like $5, so old all the capacitors have leaked and are useless. It takes a few seconds to warm up, and I can hear quite a bit of line-noise(most likely caused by the missing caps).

Now, I don't know what sort of sound-levels/voltages come out of a guitar, but couldn't you just hook it up to the microphone-in port on your computer, or a stereo? Easy and cheap amplifier right there.

The only guitar I can play has five buttons, a paddle, and a spring-loaded whammy bar.

Robbie-

Good question. Biggest reason? I've never heard of this system in my life. ^^

I'll look into it, but really, I think that in the case of actual instrument amplifiers, it may not be quite what I'm looking for. From what I've "researched," yeah, it would be perfect for a intercom/PA system, but what I'm looking for is a whole crap load of power-this is, after all, going to be my last amplifier for quite some time, and it WILL be used in live performances.

You actually raise a great point in using a computer; that's what I'll do when I want to record anything. I'm not too "hip" on the whole music studio scene, either, but no, I don't see why I couldn't just daisy-chain a bunch of pedals together and plug them and my guitar into my computer. Considering the processors in these things nowadays-if that actually has any effect on what you can do-all I'd need is a set of awesome bass speakers (got em ^^), a set of awesome...err... REGULAR speakers (got em ^^ Altec Lansing FTW), and a sweet subwoofer (gotta get one that really goes WOOF!).

I know what you're saying-why not just make it yourself, it costs a lot less. But dude, seriously, I'm LAZY! ^^ Nah, I'll ask my guitar instructor about the whole MOSFET scene when I see him on monday. Thanks for the suggestion, it might just be the start of an awesome road to fame and fortune. Or, ya know, not... But if so, it's my fault. =^.^=

Fast-

Aha, but can you beat Hangar 18, Misrolue (sp?), YYZ, Laid to Rest, Beast and the Harlot, and Institutionalized on expert with 5 stars? I sure can't! ^^

Heck, do you even have GH2?

Well, about amps... I hear a lot of talk about the Peavey Valveking. I've never really been good with amps and such...considering I just use a Roland Cube 60 with only an A/B footswitch. Plus I'm so picky with my tone once I get a certain setting, I almost never change it. And I don't really have any money to dish out for a great amp. JUST STAY AWAY FROM MARSHALL MG'S. Their tone is disgusting.

On topic of tone, have you found your "signature tone"? Mine is...

For Overdrive settings
Bass:4
Mid: 6
Treble: 7
Gain: 4.5
Delay: 4
Reverb: 8

And Clean is the same, except with Delay kicked up towards 8 and Reverb lowered to 6.

If you like fingerstyle, click the link in my sig </fanboy>

I play acoustic too. It's kind of an "ehh" acoustic. Nothing too special. But because I'm hardcore I play my acoustic in DGCFAD instead of EADGBe.

Plus the way I play electric is like a mix between the piano and fingerstyle acoustic. I hybrid pick, and when I play certain chords, I actually fingerpick all the notes instead of strumming. I'm a big theory whore as well... which makes me pretty popular among my metal playing friends.

If I can ever get my hands on one, I will practice vigorously with the 12 -holed ocarina. Ocarinas are awesome. I like the ocarina, and there is nothing anyone can say to make me stop liking them. :D

Yeah, I haven't heard good things about any Marshalls, believe it or not. I'll check out that Peavey link you gave me, and no I haven't really found my perfect tone, but I tend to like fairly high bass/trebel, middle at 6 or 7, very slight reverb, and just a touch of distortion. If I get an overdrive pedal (I'm looking at that yellow Boss one, for like 40 bucks-a cheapie, i guess...) I'll probably nock the trebel, bass, and gain down quite a bit.

I do play acoustic too, quite a lot as of late. Yeah, I tend to keep my acoustic dropped down a step too, mostly because I'm trying out a bunch of grunge songs right now to get a bit of a feel for their style. It's simple as hell, but has a lot of potential if I throw some bluesyness into there. I'm really not all that into blues, but hey, almost everything has SOME blues in it, so I figure, what the heck?

I did go today, though, and I got the Boss TU-2 tuner pedal, which should be hella convenient, as my guitar gets out of tune if you look at it the wrong way (curse you floating bridge!!!).

Anyways, I'll check out that amp you linked. I've been hearing about some "Deluxe Reverb" amp, as well, if that interests you, but last I checked, they were going for around $1K, and rising, so I dunno...

Rock on. =^.^=

THAT'S FOR WUSSES.
Real men play classical.

Though actually I don't care much for classical... nor am I a man... hrm...

I took classical guitar lessons, but I'm actually kinda meh on guitar. I'm nowhere near great, but I do play a bit to relieve stress and other undesirable emotions and all that good stuff. I'd like to learn how to play songs by ear, but I don't know if I have it in me. We'll see what happens when I take the guitar lessons this summer.

I have 2 acoustic guitars... I can't play them, but they are there

I'm to busy making tunes with my VST synths and other weirdness to practice enough to actually be able to play anything.

Sorry for the double post (unless someone posts in the 5 mins between me posting last and this being posted, hehehe...). Here Ozy, turns out it's a Fender, and it's just under $1K:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-65-Deluxe-Reverb-Combo-Amp?sku=480507

That's the one my instructor suggested. I'm kinda thrown off by the fact that it's only 22W, but he said it still screams if you want it to. That Peavey looks great, but since you have it, I just gotta ask-towards the bottom of the comments on the page you gave me, a guy is complaining about it "squealing." Do you have the problem he describes?

I don't have the Peavey, I just hear lots of talk about it. Good things mainly. He might just be getting feedback from standing to close to the amp. I've done that before and yelled at the sound crew not realizing I was doing that >_>. I suggest trying the amps out if possible. Bring your guitar to GC and just ask to play.

Heck, since we're on the subject of guitars, here's our last show. I'm the one with the black shirt and the yellow strap. Or, gee, I guess the pictures are labeled with our names, so if you see Thomas...yeah...that's me...
