Ok...so...My dad saved a baby bird from my cat and now is taking care of it. Unfortunately, my family went to kennywood (local amusement park) for most likely the entire day. So I'm left feeding it. Can baby birds eat anything but bugs?

No and you have to feed those little monsters nonstop pretty much all day or they'll die.

amagad. Kennywood is local to you? Kennywood is about an hour drive from me. Should've gone to Kennywood, birds aren't worth it. It's going to die, really. The same thing happened to me, except my friends dog got at it, and we found blood all over the grass.

Personally, I'd say give up. But if you're really bent on saving it, yeah...bugs is pretty much all it will eat.

Yeah, its about an hour from here, too. But I spent all yesterday at Idlewild, and now I'm burnt, sore, and exhausted. So I opted out of kennywood.

Well, +2 hours, and its still alive. Pics incoming...i guess.

EDIT: Image
Here it is. Strange thing is, My dad said he saved it from my cat, but I can't find any wounds or blood.

Hrm...I remember finding and trying to nurse back to health a baby bird when I was little. It's really difficult to successfully raise them to adulthood, so don't be surprised if the little guy doesn't make it :( They have to be fed every 15-20 minutes from morning till night if they're very young, so I hope you have lots of bugs on hand ~_~'

I found this link on raising abandoned baby birds...it gives some alternate food ideas which may be helpful if you're unable to find enough insects. Good luck.

No.

naming things tends to psycologically link you to the animal. And since th mortality rate is somthing of a concern, I don't think a name is a wise choice at the moment. "The Bird" should do for now.

And thus, it was named. Way to go.

Edit: +4 hours since I started taking care of it, still alive and kicking.

For one thing, it looks like little critter is fledged. This is a plus to your side, because they're pretty hardy by this point.

Secondly, do we know the species? 'Cause that will have a biiig impact on diet. (I. E. don't wanna feed fruit to a bug eater, and don't want ot feed bugs to a fruit eater, etc.)

AAAND....there's usually places you can take baby birds that will take care of them until they're ready to fend for themselves. Our zoo takes in foundlings, and some humane shelters have the capacity etc.

...just...not PETA, okay? :?

My parents are home, so my dad's feeding it now, he thinks its a bluejay. I want them to take it to the Aviary in pittsburgh, its only a 45 minute drive from here.
So, its survived six hours of me taking care of it and its still going strong. Hopefully it will last a lot longer.

That's awesome - and as Wynni said, it looks to be an older chick, so your odds have improved...
But that aviary idea might be the way to go...

An aviary? If the chick is going to survive into adulthood, taking it there would be the best bet, I think. They'll be able to identify the species and will know exactly what kind of food it needs to grow up strong and healthy. Glad to hear it's still doing well...kudos to you for taking such good care of it :)
