WHAT IS A "FURRY"?
"Furry" when used as a noun seems to refer to one of two things:
a) An animal-like character known as a "furry"
b) A person who is a "furry fan"
The latter is easy enough (knock on wood) to define: A person who
particularly enjoys stories, pictures, dolls, video games or whatever
concerning "furry" creatures. Defining a "furry" creature is somewhat
harder, though. There are several definitions depending upon which "camp" in furrydom, for lack of a better term, you might be in.
The basic definition for a "furry" is an anthropomorphized animal
character. In other words, an animal character given human-like
attributes, such as sapience and often a humanoid form. The term "furry"
is a misnomer, as a creature does not need to have fur to be "furry" in this sense. Other terms sometimes interchangeable with a "furry" in this
sense are "zoomorph", "morph", "anthropomorph" or (debatably) "funny
animal".
he core definition of a "furry" seems to include basically humanoid-formed
creatures with animal faces, fur/scale/feathers/whatever, and often
appropriate tails, wings, claws, etc., able to speak, and with a human-like
personality, though quite often with "quirks" hinting at the real-life
animal upon which the character is based.
A broader definition will sometimes include other odd creatures that simply
have some sort of animal features in their makeup. Such would include
mythical creatures such as centaurs, manticores, satyrs or harpies, all of
which have human faces though more-or-less animal-like bodies. This
broader definition might also include the human-like characters that appear in some Japanese animation that have an animal tail and ears, but otherwise look about as human as any other anime character.
One of the narrower definitions held by some is that in order for a
character to be truly considered "furry", the character must exhibit
animal-like characteristics in behavior. Optionally, the fact that the
character is an "animal" must be a major ingredient to the story. This is
exhibited in a frequent criticism of "furry" stories by those who hold this
view: Many stories, while featuring characters fitting the core definition
of "furry" given earlier are criticized as being "humans in animal suits"
if their behavior isn't distinctly animal-like in some way.

Anthropomorphic is a term used to describe ANYTHING with human like features that isn't human. The tucan from froot loops is a anthro, the poptart from the comercial is an anthro. Simba from the Lion King is an anthro, and a robot girl is indeed an anthro.
Furry is a term that relates to the animal section to that term. Such as Simba would be a furry, but a can of soda that talks would not be. Inuyasha would be a fur, Jabber Jaw would be a fur. Bugs Bunny is a Fur. And yes, catgirls are indeed furs. This is speaking from a politically correct point of view, not sided for individual beliefes. If you have a problem with this, please private message me and it will be discussed from there, but for now, this is the final word.
*Beastiality, and people who believe they are really animals are not Furrys*
March 30th edit: Tom's comic. Is it furry?
Strait to the point, this is basically a side chooser. And neither one is wrong. Some consider it an anthropomorphic comic because half the people in it are furs. Some consider it manga because of the style used, and still some think of it as something else.
None of these are wrong, But technically doesnt make them right, Because the last time I checked everyone was allowed to have opinions.
Tom, If you have something to add, please edit this. (and dont kill me!)

Forgot to add this a long time ago - Kemonomimi - thats what catgirls and fox girls and dog girls are if they arent covered in fur. Kemonomimi includes characters or people that wear just cat ears and or a tail. The point at which a Kemonomimi becomes a furry is when that character has fur over more than %50 of the body. Thus a catgirl with cat ears, tail, hands and feet can still be a Kemonomimi rather than be classified as your usual furry. The only character that is sorta yes and sorta no that I know of is Felicia from Darkstalkers. She has probably just around 45-55% fur - its hard to put her in either catagory for sure because according to the history of her character she is capable of appearing completely human - thus she can transform to any point on the "not furry to furry chart"
Anyways- Catgirls are furries if you define furry as "any creature that has animal characteristics as well as human characterisitcs."
But the argument that catgirls are NOT furries is not wrong either based on the definition that a Kemonomimi is not a furry but a small mix between an animal and a human
Much like the argument to be percise - In an anime convention if you say Catgirl everyone thinks a Kemonomimi and at a furry con everyone thinks (yiff! - haha-- a joke at the furry expense...) they think of a furry with catgirl traits.
The defining line is - Catgirl Kemonomimi is anime style AND is more human than animal. Catgirl Furry is an american style- more rare anime style but there are some and more because of Animes current popularity- and they are more of an animal than human.
Now this topic is over a year and 4 months old! ^_^ - Sage
