I just encountered this in DMV and I was about to blow a gasket. Both involved were customers and... ugh it's driving me up the wall. There's a woman and her son that come in every so often. The woman is mentally and physically challenged and so is her son. Both of them talk extremely loud, but that's their natural tone of voice. That and her son is like... 34 years old and looks like he's 14 o_O

She was having a decent converstation with the security guard and this woman holding her baby, RUDELY, talking to her friends, goes: *scoff* "OH MY GOD SHUT UP." She wasn't yelling, but she was being loud about it and, blatently, doing it on purpose. Her friends would laugh, and look at the woman that the lady was telling to shut up, but she continued to converse with the security guard.

"OH MY GOD SERIOUSLY!"

and whenever the woman got up to do something, they'd talk about her: "Oh my god she's so retarded what a blah blah blah"

I was getting so ticked, but in an effort not to lose my job, I kept my mouth shut. I mean geez, the BABY was being QUIET compared to this womans... UGH!

I mean really. How can people be so RUDE and IGNORANT and... I CAN'T EVEN THINK OF THE WORDS >_< I want to walk over there and pop her across the head. You'd think someone would understand if someone is handicap and can't control their voice my goodness...

So what do you guys think? Am I wrong? Should these people be treated like normal people? Should we treat them better? Or do we be rude?

I've dealt with them before. They really are nice people. They're just... loud.

Am I over reacting?

Nope, I don't think you are overreacting, I think some little brats never grew up (don't care HOW old they are), and are more handicapped than the mentally challenged woman and son.

Yeah you are right it is not right to make fun of the mentally and physically challenged. You were underreacting.

Really, I'm surprised someone else didn't speak up. I'd have probably exploded. Good job keeping your cool, and your job.

The people around her were looking. Some were laughing which aggrivated me even more.

Darling, some people just can't comprehend something like that. They've never had it hit close to home, I guess, or were born with too little imagination.

Either way, if they weren't such snots, they'd be worthy of pity.

Really irritate them, pity them anyway.

No, I wouldn't wish mental handicaps on a child.

Now, an accident that requires rehabilitation to get back where they were ....that should give the snots a more enlightened perspective, yes?

If they knew that the woman and her son were handicapped, thats one thing, but are you sure they were aware? And the people around, did they know who the woman was? To you, that woman and her son are handicapped. To someone who doesn't know those facts, she's just a woman who's talking very loudly and disrupting their conversations.

I'm not trying to excuse what she did, but merely shed some light on an alternate viewpoint.

Wow Kitten, I've yet to see this scary side of you. It makes my scales quiver... :D

I'll admit, I like to poke fun at the whole "retard" scene (mostly stealing off of some Carlos Mencia stuff), but I never lose sight of the harsh reality of it. I'm not immediately affected by anything of the sorts, but it's hit close enough to home for me to respect the fact that they can't do anything about it. In addition, I'm extremely shy, and even if the woman was ticking me off, I'd never have the courage to say or do anything...

That being said, what a bunch of jerks... If Ryusen is right, then you can't totally blame them (besides the fact that only an would be such...well...an about it). However, no matter how good it would make you feel, I don't think popping them a good one across the face would change their assishness.

As Brice Hornsby said, "that's just the way it is."

Heck, my parents WORK at the biggest center for mentally handicapped people in Iowa. I've been up there many times before and honestly most people up there are nice....a little on the ditzy side but still very nice people

yes yes I will admit I've had my share of "retard" jokes, but honetly those who just think retard as a joke and joke only are jerks, people really are mentally handicapped and that's not a laughing matter

This one guy can know what exact date of everybody's birthday who lives or works at the place, but he doesn't know his own name....he's normal, but he just forgets somethings that most would consider normal.

Those girls who were [censored] about the handicapped folks were just jealous of them. Obviously these girls had more serious handicaps to deal with, and should be pitied after beaten to a cheap-mascara-wearing pulp.

I've noticed when girls get in a group - younger girls - they grow what we like to call "femballs." These femballs enable them to advance their [censored]-Levels by at least 10-20 points. When these girls discover that their femball-enhanced [censored]-Levels are of the approval of their [censored]-Friends, they feel a social obligation to be [omgcensored].

I feel sorry for people like this. These girls obviously felt awkward about *not* making juvenile comments in the presence of something different, so in order to slip themselves back into a comfort zone, they had to be dicks. People are cruel, but they'll grow up. Hopefully they'll remember stuff like this and be able to look back on it and realize how incredibly dumb they were.

@CMB: Isn't that some sort of savant condition, being able to remember near-unlimited stores of specific information and lacking the ability to cope with the rest?

It's tricky to diagnose, I'd assume. Savants can be kids with Downs Syndrome who play Mozart flawlessly, but can't add two and two together without difficulty. I'm not sure either what the exact definition is, but that's roughly what I associate the term with.
