How do you deal with people that have a very boastful personality when it comes to competition?

Long story short, I had to resist the urge of beating my friend over the head with an aluminum bat...

Hmmm, that's a very good question. It depends: how well does he take a hint? Telling him "enough" might work . If said friend is dense, you may need to accompany the enough by the application of cut communications. Any time he starts, leave, hang up the phone, or shut a door on him.

I have been known to get carried away on occasion, and it takes good friends to tell a person "chill", especially if said person can be dense  .

If you can get someone they respect to tell them to cool it, that usually works. When I was younger, I was very competitive, and that was what usually calmed me down. That, or just show them up -- horribly. Nothing cures an ego like humility.

Plug your ears and go "LALALALALALALALAICAN'THEARYOULALALALALALA"

No. Really. If they've got an ego, just be blunt.

haha... usually to cope with someone being boastful I use sarcastic insults but then mean it in my head... like.... uhhh

"Man you suck at this game I bet a 4 year old could take you, what are you talkin' about bein' good?!"

things of that nature

I always do an extremely complicated insult that doesn't make any sense whatsoever but it works in the situation.

That's awesome.

I just outsmart them, and make them look like an idiot. Seriously, if they make a grammatical error, interrupt and point it out. They'll stop talking for a sec, and feel slightly stupider. You could begin to argue that something they claim they did is bull. Or, one of my favorite things, act like a crazy person so they'll shut up from the sheer zaniness of you comment. They'll eventually stop talking to you.

Put a maniacal gleam in your eye, summon Satan's voice, say "enough" while holding up duct tape, and the smelliest sock you can find.

Think he'd take a hint?

I feel slightly disconcerted, Ego related to competition is my bigest flaw. Really, it is. I am a terrible braggart in most everything.

But the best way to shut them up is to beat them at whatever they are mumbling about, and then make it abudantly clear that you defeated them in a humiliating manner. Though that might on me, since I only brag about things I'm really good at.

Other than that, scathing humor works pretty well. Do a little practice with put-downs for that situation and everything should be good.

If you don't like those suggestions, well... I don't know. Those are my approaches.

Well my mate never shuts up about all his wins thinking his better then me (game i never play and he practices about 3-4 months)
all i do is ignore him and say you'll never be his friends again if he keeps it up.
It's what i did about his LAN party i didn't go instead i had a couple of really cool mates come over
