I tend to use latin translations of names and edit them a bit.. or just leave them as is.. one of my D'n'D character's names is Sempiterna... and I also love the name Sabine.

If you don't simply want to associate sound parts that you like (this is how I usually name my computers, producing things like "Xiowyn," the name of my laptop), then I'd recommend you spend time on Behind the Name for real names or Seventh Sanctum for procedurally generated names.

I'd suggest strongly, however, that you use any of that for simple inspiration. A name has a lot of meaning and power. So it's important that when you read the name, it gives you a feel for the character. A person grows into their name; given a different name, they'd be a different person.

Hey, now! That's how I named my dog. :P

(Yes, I did name my dog after my beloved Tauren Warrior, even if I no longer play her. Yes, I'm aware of how pathetic that sounds, but since I made the name up, it's slightly less depressing.)

Heh. My Laptop is called "The Hexagon." You know, like the pentagon... only one better.

Honestly, the only real reason I like Japanese names is because they're so flexible. Honestly, it's nice having names that are spelled phonetically. Seriously, just throw together sounds until you come up with something that works. Occasionally, mythology provides excellent starting points for names. Honestly, just play with things until they sound right.

Let me agree with Sable: having easily spelled names is a huge boon to your fanbase. (How often is even Keith's name misspelled by fans?) I'd also recommend one that's either short (less than three or maybe four syllables) or decomposes easily to a one or two syllable nickname. It could just be me, but I'd rather not always have to refer to someone as something like "F'nthirythadwn" every single time I spoke to them. (That one points out another thing -- be very careful about the apostrophied sounds. They're incredibly overused in science fiction and fantasy.) I'll grant, inventive characters could easily come up with a nickname (and they ought to) for most names, but starting with a name that rolls easily off the tongue saves a lot of pain. I mean, just the debates over pronunciation among fans can be violent. (Everyone remember the "How do you pronounce 'Keidran?'" thread?)

In the end though, I must simply say, "Sable is right." Find a name that sounds right when you say it out loud. When you look at the character's image and say her name, they should seem to go together, and the name should come easily to your tongue.

Ahh! That reminds me. If you come up with a name, and it doesn't fit the character you're working on, don't just toss it away. Write it down, because you may find another use for it. Especially with minor or one-time characters.

I've never really 'got' the whole apostrophe in a name thing unless it's actually a short version of the name. Like, say, Ju'n from Julian (lame example, I know). Otherwise, what's the point? It doesn't actually make a sound. The name would be better off without it.

Hypothetical long name: D'ryntho'lanya.
Truth? It's a short version of Dophterolirynthoquarwalanya. Damn Elves and their long names...
