They're speaking the same language, thus no lingual identifiers. (I'm guessing that, technically,
nobody speaks English in the comic).
Well, so much for the "web of lies and deceit" theory. Averted by Natani's remarkable inability to keep her mouth shut. Like all too many of us, especially in the sitcom that her life is turning into.
I like how she's surprised by her own reaction. Maybe she'll put together why she cares what he does.

Next comes the awkward follow up where Natani tries to explain why she said that and how she knows about Laura. And, in the end, either Keith and Natani end up much closer together (the sitcom ending) or Keith feels betrayed by her and pulls away (the soap opera ending). But first, we should go back outside where Laura is coming to, surrounded by Eric (who she fears is sizing her up for his dining plate), and Trace (the horrifying apparition of senseless violence and death).

The next thing that runs through Natani's head is, "'You deserve better?' What did I mean by that? ...
Who did I mean by that?" If we put on our Captain Subtext helmets, we can read all kinds of things into her statement, "You deserve better." That's not an uninvolved outsider's words. Those are the sort of thing which can only come from a close friend, and if (as in this case), said friend is attracted to you, it's tinged with a jealousy, a feeling of "maybe someone more like me." Very interesting window into her psychological state, that line there.
