SkyNews wrote:
A man who played video games for hours each day has been convicted of killing his 17-month-old daughter when she pulled out his Xbox console.

Jurors rejected arguments that Tyrone Spellman had confessed to protect the child's mother.

After a day of deliberation, they convicted Spellman of third-degree murder and child endangerment, for which he faces up to 47 years in prison.

Prosecutors in Philadelphia believe he pummelled Alayiah Turman, cracking her skull several times, while her pregnant mother slept in another room on September 7, 2006.

They argued that Spellman fled the house afterwards, and that the mother, Mia Turman, had no reason to go in the bedroom where the baby was found.

"He spent six to seven hours a day in there playing Xbox," Assistant District Attorney James Berardinelli said.

Spellman, 27, of Philadelphia, confessed to police the next day, but defence lawyer Bobby Hoof said his statement had been coerced after 24 hours in custody.

"He's not happy with the verdict. He does not agree with the verdict, but he respects the jury verdict," Mr Hoof said of Spellman.

A post-mortem examination showed that Alayiah had suffered a broken arm about two weeks before she died - an injury that city social workers did not see on two visits to the house in late August, when they found the toddler well.

The city took custody of the couple's second daughter, born after Alayiah's death.

Wth?!

OVER A FRIGGIN XBOX?!

Pathetic. You'd think people would learn how to grow up and stop being so childish.

You know... sometimes I think its a shame that you can only kill a person once. Some crimes are just too aweful.

that puts a bad name on gamers although people like that should not play games if they cannot reconnect to reality

I thought that the guy who killed himself after his WoW account was hacked was out of his mind. The father should be beaten to death with his own Xbox. Just so he knew how his daughter felt.

How was he only convicted of third-degree murder? Because he was obviously not in his right mind?

It seems they're coming out of the woodwork: we're still reeling down here over the piece of trash that threw his children off the Dauphin Island bridge. 4 children. The oldest barely three, and the youngest 4 months.

It makes me wish very unchristian things on him.

*sigh*

This is why we need the death penalty. People are willing to take their chances killing over tiny things now because we don't have the backbone to punish people.

I kill 'im. I kill the (insert numerous expletives here) dead.

Now that I've got that out of my system....

Seriously......My 2-yr old brother pulled the RCA cable out of my xbox while I was in the middle of a firefight.....I muttered, moved him out of the way (he kept saying 'uh oh, uh oh'- funny and irritating at at the same time) and stuck it back in. End of story. Wasn't on purpose (this time...) but he's old enough to know not to touch. At 17 months they're hardly old enough to recognise a cable.....maybe the button but on an xbox it's a pretty green circle......17-months....
*shakes head muttering dark oaths*

Gov't should have a right to punish these people by torturing them, because frankly death for them is just an easy way out. If I were to be tortured rather then just killed then I would not even go near breaking a law. :P I knoq its harsh, but it works!

Well, scientifically speaking, natural selection does NOT favor a complicated or difficult reproduction method. Kinda defeats the purpose.

and unfortunately, those without the good sense to raise a child usually also lack the sense to prevent pregnancy, and the children that survive that childhood go on to make more doomed kids.

I literally ache for these poor babies, but I don't think torture is right, in any case.
Making him suffer won't bring back that baby, and a man tht far gone won't learn any better. After the anger and grief subside, you'll feel horrible that you've allowed yourself to sink to his level.

Oh, something like that shouldn't live, by no means. He's another baby murder waiting to happen. Kill him; kill him fast, and as humanely as possible. Then hang his hide out to rot in the sun so that self preservation *might* deter the next psycho from taking its misplaced anger out on a baby.
