Heres a question,

What do you guys think of when people talk about Hawaii? Ex. grass skirts, grass shacks...

Lol, I always find the answers from other people interesting... Like how some people thought pineapples grew in a tree and not on the ground :p

This should probably be in the ranting board, so you might get relocated.

I think Hawaii is probably clearer than Singapore, in the sense that the sea isn't coloured a dirty green from being so near the shipping harbour, or the sand isn't full of all sorts of debris. I'm sorry, my idea of Hawaii comes from postcards and 'Lilo and Stitch'. :?

Is it really as beautiful as the travel guides make it out to be, or do you live closer to the centre of the island? Any volcanoes? And now that I think about it, do you live in Honolulu, or somewhere else?

The first thing that pops into my mind is the stereotypical stuff like grass skirts, Hawaii music, flower necklaces, etc. Besides that I don't really know much about Hawaii. I think it's kinda cool how the islands were formed, though.

In every cartoon I've seen the sand is bright yellow/white but shouldn't it be black since the islands were formed in volcanic eruptions?

Do you people use the geothermal activity in any way?

For some reason I always assumed pineapples grew in trees. It's kinda stupid now that I think of it. Where the hell did that idea come from, anyway?

I think we do have a couple of black sandy beaches in Big Island, Everything here in Oahu is white/yellow sand.

The only volcanoes that are active are Kilauea and Mauna Kea, dunno if they use the geothermal activity for power, most likely they do for electrical turbines.

Fact: Theres a new island forming just off of Big Island... Loihi I think was its name.

As for the pineapple idea... no clue, think it was the spanish that brought pineapples to the island.

I live in Waipahu on the eastern side of Oahu, Honolulu is the Central area... usually tourists dont go past Honolulu.

Beautiful depends on what part of the island you live, most of the pictures of Hawaii are usually taken in Waikiki... North Shore to me is beautiful, waipahu is really dry because the rain clouds get caught up on the northern area of the island.

How do i get my post relocated... I think your right, my post belongs in the ranting board... sorry for misplacing my post =^_^=

A mod will do it for you eventually. I always just imagined the stereotypical stuff, 'cause that's all I've ever seen.

Having watched a lot of Hawaii 5-0 and Magnum PI, I'm well-aware that some parts of Hawaii are quite urban...

...but I hear that there are still parts only accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicles...mostly on the smaller islands, I think...

I think lots of sun, little air conditioning, and plenty of tanned girls.

Also, my great grandma who's probably not even half as tall as I am now.

Hmm, Hawaii: coral reefs, incredible blue waters, colorful fish, Polynesian culture, and pineapple farms.

I was watching a special on Hawaiian culture, and there was a lady fussing about US jets that flew overhead, along the lines of "show offs, rubbing it in that they conquered us" is there a lot of that? Or was it just her and a few others?

Actually I'm suprised that you brought that up... sadly, a lot of the native Hawaiians were not accepting when it came down to the USA overthrowing the Hawaian Monarchy and taking over... Some of them really dont want anyone other than blood Hawaiians to stay here in the islands... Kamemehameha High School is a private school reserved only to students of Hawaiian blood... A lot of things happened in the islands that weren't "paradise"...

*Chuckles* Yes, nobody must forget the girls in bikinis...

Theres a place on the island that only off road vehicles can go, its on the north west edge of Oahu

... And yes... we are all frigin short T_T im only 5'4"

A busting economy powered by tourism, of course.

Beaches with awesome surf (we get nothing good here on the east coast).

Many, many tan people.

A laid back atmosphere.

Cultural celebrations (grass skirts, etc.)

I don't really know that much about Hawaii. I've never been there, but I do have family that has, so thats what I have to make due with.

My dad used to work in tourism, really really profitable and successful, tourist going to luaus and such.

I dunno much about surfing... I cant swim... yeah, i live surrounded by ocean, and i cant swim... but waves are ridiculous in north shore, one time i got caught up by an under toe and got throttled by a wave, took a week to get the sand out of my hair and scalp...

It's funny, but after I read this entire thread, I suddenly had the impression that Hawaii was a bit like the Basitin Isles.
