Hello all and welcome to this wonderful discussion topic:

My question to everyone today is about the advent of HD DVD and Blu Ray.

9 years ago I got my first DVD play for Christmas. The Christmas of '98. The DVD I recieved for christmas came with five discs and boldly stated there were now over 400 DVD titles! Now I loved my DVD player. The audio was noticably better and the picture quality upgraded. I grew up wioth VCRs and this was a step up. But here's the thing...I grew up with VCRs.

VCRs burst onto the scene in 1979. For the first time movies could be viewed multiple times, and you didn't have to wait up for the late late show((as my dad often did to watch John Wayne movies)). We got our first VCR in 1981 and it was a Sony Betamax player. My dad won a contest.

So the 80's rolled on and the 90's rolled on and it wasn't til the late 90's that DVD players came about. I had almost 20 years with various and sundry VCRs ((and yes we finally did switch to VHS, even though I still have the Sony beta player and it still works))

So now it is 2007. I still have my orginal DVD player, but it's only been 9 years. Do you think 9 years is a long enough time to exepct people to live with a format before updgrading? Is it too soon? I haven't seen the sell through numbers, but I have the feeling that HD DVD and Blu Ray are not taking off like they would have liked.

I don;t see a killer App like the Matrix that forced everyone finally over to DVD in the HD generation.

Are people waiting for the format wars to be over? I know it sucked in the VHS vs. Beta days.

Anyone out there actually have a next gen DVD player?

I'm not supporting the next gen formats until the war is really over and one has won out. That, and I'm not buying one until the powers that be get rid of the DRM. Blu-Ray players actually have to have firmware updates because Sony keeps updating the DRM, and they can't play Blu-Ray discs without the update, which is silly for a standalone player like that.

For someone who worked at a movie theater for 2 1/2 years, I actually don't like movies very much. I would see them for free when I worked there, and I'm still on good enough terms to get in for free. About the only DVDs I actually went out and bought are LOTR, the matrix series, and some Jet Li movies.

I guess when you've spend this much time in and around movies, you just kind of lose you interest in them. After leaving for school in September, I haven't seen a single movie, and don't really plan to. Not that I have anything against them, I wanted to kill someone after seeing 300.

Which reminds me of a funny story. I was once carrying the 300 film across to another projector to load it, and I dropped the film. It weighed about 60 pounds, and had about 4.5 miles of frames in it. Took me two days to spool it back up.

I feel so thoroughly sorry for you, dude. But, I have to say, I loved 300. "THIS! IS! SPARTA!!!"
I think I'll enjoy Beowolf a little more though. "I! Am! Beowolf!"

300 is, without a doubt, the manliest movie ever made. I would even go so far as to call it the best movie of this, or any other year.

Ladies, don't go see this movie, it will put hair on your chest. Guys, you'll want to kill someone after seeing it.

Well, bluray is the better of the two formats, but if history replays itself, its usually the worse and cheaper that wins.

lol, i made a very poor pun, "replays" : P

They do have dual-format players out there now...

But I didn't know about Blu-Ray needing regular updates, though - that's just goofy...and a hassle. Hassles don't sell.

Bad, Blu-Ray, BAD!

I never knew that about Blu-Ray before. I already had my doubts about it already, but that just settles it for me now, heheh. *marks down Xbox 360 HD DVD player attachment on the list as a future buy* XP
