I'm told that there is a huge rock near a gravel pit on Hwy. 25 in rural Iowa. For generations kids have painted slogans, names, and obscenities on this rock, changing its character many times. A few months back the rock received its latest paint job and since then it has been left completely undisturbed.
This is freaking awesome. Props to the guy who did it.

PS. I've noticed in the StumbleUpon reviews that some people there are associating this with the Iraq war. This has *nothing* to do with the war itself, but instead is a tribute to soldiers past and present who are serving their country.

Yeah, I got that in an e-mail a few weeks ago. It's pretty awesome :) I remain in complete awe of the flag on top.

Dang, thats pretty cool. Too bad we don't have anything like that in South Carolina. That artwork is pretty impressive. I can imagine people getting really pissed when some punk kid comes along and writes profanity all over that nice, new paint job.

wow that is neat.

I thought that the three guys(in the painting) in the first picture were two leprechauns.

Anyways its nice to know that people do take their time and be creative for the nation on a rock, :D and the painting of the flag realy does make it look like the flag was draped over it!

That is the most awesome thing I've ever seen in a gravel pit.
Seriously, how cool is that!

i still can't get over how real that flag looks. it took someone with a lot of talent a fair amount of time to do that. nice to know that patriotism still exists :)

It's also surprising that there's someone who has that level of patriotism w/o jingoism.

It's great and all, but did they really need a Bush quote on it? He doesn't deserve to be honored with those who have fought & died for this country.

jdog, all due respects, there's no way you didn't know that was flame bait. Obviously someone does think he deserves to be remembered, and unless you plan to go vandalize the rock yourself and likely get your hide beaten severely, he will be. So tough.

You know, for some reason, everyone's just hated whoever's been in power for the past couple of decades, and I think it's a national attitude more than poor leadership. Of course, saying that means I will inevitably be spewed upon with stuff like "Bush eats babies and laughs at people on death row and poops on the graves of other presidents-" meh. dun much care what people say, I've stopped trying to sort out what's real and what isn't when people talk about the President.

I personally haven't heard too many things that scare me from him, only people talking about him or making fun of his grammar. Of course, good speaking skills are definite signs of good leaders, right?

heheh. M'kay, I'm done.

heh yeah, I have yet to hear a good reason why Bush should not be president... well I have heard people make up atleast 30 reasons, none which were even close to reality or backed up by anything more than rumors or prejudice. (lets not turn this into a Bush-bashing thread, do that somewhere else)

Anyway yeah, the rock is awesome, I did think the flag was drapped over it until you guys brought up that it was painted on.

It's kind of like Gerald R. Ford's presidency. When he pardoned president Richard Nixon for Watergate, the American public was in an uproar. He became a very unpopular president. The country was still in turmoil from all the events of Watergate, and it was devastating the economy. By pardoning Nixon, he actually helped save the US. In his time, people hated him for it and called him the worst president they had ever had. Now, historians looked back and realized that he sacrificed his career in order to push America forward, and he is viewed as one of our best presidents.

Thats what Bush is doing. He's making all these choices that, now, seem like horrible mistakes, but are actually pushing America forward. Though, unlike Ford, he was elected for a 2nd term, I still believe historians will look back in 2o or 30 years and see a president who sacrificed his political career for the good of America.

Actually, most analysts think that he's commuting Libby for political reasons, mostly because his stated reasons are totally opposite those he stated on the issue of commuting and pardoning previous to Libby. For example, one of the first on his stated list of prerequisites for even considering commuting a sentence is that the requester have exhausted every judicial rout, while Libby's appeal process hasn't even started. Bush okayed the execution of a man who's lawyer fell asleep during his trial.

Most of the jokes about Bush are not about how he says stuff anymore, they're about what he's saying, especially how it compares to what he said last week. For example, The Daily Show has led off almost every episode in the last month by comparing what the Bush administration is saying with what the administration was saying. So far this year, John Stewart has tried to explain that you can't deny saying something that you said in a press conference, because they have cameras five times.
