Everyone keeps telling me to just play around with it. I bought a Photoshop 7 for Dummies book from Waldenbooks though. You should do the same.

I know photoshop pretty well, I learned it in my graphic arts class at skewl, I just got it for my computer at home, and it's very good, I'd like to help you, but I dunno what your problem is, and can't exactly go over like every detail of the entire program.

ok, that much I know, try highlighting the area with magic wand(if using magic wand doesn't get as big an area as you wanted try holding shift, and click more area with it to get more, or if you get too much try using the lasso tool, or the polygonal laso tool to get the area you want), then under Image>Adjustments> there are then two ways I've found effective in coloring, you can use the Replace Color thing, and make the highlighted area slightly darker(if it is too light), then use the color balance(ctrl + b) to increase the amount of color in that area, and you can mix them to get other colors, and such. It might not be the best way, ut it's how I color, it's how I got my avatar colored.

Oh, and you can use replace color to change the colors of things, but it doesn't always work well with blacka nd white things, it mostly like can turn color to other color, but you can use it if it works for you, I'd just use it to darken the whitish areas so the color added didn't look all dark on the edges, and light in the middle, I did that once, and it made my bandana look all shiny, and cloth shouldn't be so shiny, so I redid it with darkening the area with replace color, first, and it worked out well.

I know all that I know about Photoshop through Playing around with it.
Just play around with the filters, google some tutorials and the like.

I never went through a tutorial really, I just played around with all the buttons and options to see what kind of prety colours it could make. I'm certainly no expert, look at my avy. I realize now I coulda saved one heck of alot of time shading using the polygonal lasso tool, instead I shaded it all by hand using the brush tool. It's fun to learn to use though, after a certain point.
