Number Three!

Well it's official, Connecticut has approved gay civil unions to its citizens. Looks like us mid westerners aren't going to have to move to California to get hitched after all!

Discuss, celebrate, down a shot or two! We're gaining ground!

Yeah, now you can move to Connecticut....

Seriously, that's the first thing I thought of when you said that....

But back on topic--is that civil unions or is it actual marriage?

It's full on marriage. They already had civil unions that were apparently virtually the same thing but for the name, but the court said that was silly. At least that's my interpretation of it.

Were they actually acting smartly...?

The court's majority opinion stated that the creation of civil unions wasn't good enough -- it operated on a "separate but equal" basis which did not instill true equality. The only dissenting opinion (all three judges who dissented wrote their own opinions) that is mentioned in the article is one which states that marriage and its benefits were implemented as a sort of reward for activity which encourages procreation. I've played with that particular one before, not because it's a good argument, but because I can use it as a judgement of how clever an opponent is -- it's not hard to break that particular argument down if you actually try. I'm curious what the other opinions were.

Not everyone thinks this is sunshine and roses, however. And it's a useful point to make. While Connecticut isn't in a position where it's likely they'll overturn this, California's a different story. And court mandated changes to laws tend to sour voters. It would be something of an irony if Connecticut permitting gay marriage contributes significantly to it being revoked in California. We'll see... It's why I said back when California did it that we should be careful with celebration until after November.

Deep analysis aside, right now there's reason to celebrate. People are being allowed the ability to do something they should have been allowed to do from the get-go, even if it's only for a short window. In the grand scheme of things, this may be only a small victory, but I really think this is just another sign that things are changing for the better.

@Fooby: Darn right I am, :) By God, we need to find the creator of the rainbow hats and get them back up!

Religion is always on a big no-no when it comes to this, but it's one's own decision and I am no-one to go against it. Therefore the only thing I really can do is to be happy for you guys

Gay pride hats? Try something new for a change, like... Fast's pants!

I'm absolute rubbish when it comes to photoshop...

Of course, if anyone decided to take it upon themselves to tweak my avi, I would not be adverse to it...
