What kills me is that G. I . Joe (General Issue Joe) was what regular army guys were called,

and now it's code for "daring, highly trained special missions force"
oh the irony kills me (now that I'm old enough to catch it)

You didn't know that's what G.I. stood for? (Well, okay, I thought it was "Government Issue" but...) It became slang associated with virtually everything in the military. Of course, that's because virtually everything the soldiers were given was stamped with those words, and the gear was pretty similar from soldier to soldier. Because of that, it became a nickname for the soldiers carrying the equipment.

Though oddly enough, Wynni, I don't see the irony in describing our regular troops that way. :P
