Right, I think this is where the thread belongs.

Does anyone here use Skype and feel comfortable giving out their names on such? For those unaware, it's basically free online 'calls' to other people.

Drachyench here.

Why would you want anybody calling you? O_o

All I have is a cell phone and only one guy ever calls me, and that's too much. I guess skype sounds better than *paying* to have more people call you though...

They don't really call. Voice-Chat would be much more accurate. Works pretty well for group-chats if everyone has reliable equipment.

It's cheap, you can do it with a webcam, and across continental calls cost something like 2 cents a minute.

Somewhere along the line, I've been lied to.

In the same country, it's free, but you pay either 2 cents or .2 cents a minute for cross country calls.

I don't use it personally, but my parents do.

I talked to a Canadian for free.

Perhaps Mac users get lucky?

You have to pay if you're talking to a land line/cell phone. It's only free for talking to other Skype users.

Which is what I use it for. If I want to call someone on their phone, I call them over the phone. Thanks for resolving the issue though.

I'll make sure to write that down in my book of important things.

Other than costs, does Skype provide any actual benefits or advantages?

Just curious. .-.

I think you get Voice on it... and it can run behind most games without causing problems. I used it for a while with UT2004, WoW... works well for a private channel, especially if your teammates are horrible little wretches.

You can call both other skype accounts for free and phones for a charge, as fasty said it does work well behind most games and is used kind of like team speak or xfire and for the filming of machinima (look up the def. on your own this time.)
