It starts and ends with the Air Force Academy Scandal (Carroll's dad was the general who brought the Cuban missile crisis to Kennedy's attention, and Carroll himself almost became a pilot), with the beginning using interviews and information from before the scandal broke, and the end covering its breaking and aftermath (I must say, Falwell is a scary son-of-a-b-tch. He smiles like he's going to eat you).
It generally talks about the internal conflicts and unacknowledged history of Christianity, with one of the major scenes just talking with an old friend who stayed in the priesthood to change things from the inside.
The central questions are how the cross became a sword (hence the name), and how Christianity can reform its practice. Its main benefactors are interfaith relations organizations.
