Location: A dark tower on a small rocky island. Off the coast of Hawaii.
I've read books where the characters train by disadvantaging themselves. The thinking is along the lines of "If I become a great fighter with a blindfold on, I'll be really good when I take the blindfold off." Maybe that's what's happening.
