I personally liked all the original Alien movies better, though AVP was good.

It's a life changing experience, especially if you watch it with a sh1+l0ad of p3opl3!!!1 Alien and Aliens are arguably the best horror movies ever. The alien is just one of the greatest creatures in any movie, ever. If you're into that bio-mechanical stuff, head down to Barnes and Noble or something and check out some of Giger's art books.

AVP just looks like pure fun to me, and I still have to see it.
